MONOPOLY has chosen the Yorkshire Dales for its newest edition of the 'world’s most famous board game' - and it is appealing to the public to suggest just what should replace London landmarks such as Leicester Square and Oxford Street on the board.

Mr Monopoly himself will be at the Bolton Abbey Steam Railway later today (Tuesday) when it will be announced that the Dales beat off nine other areas across the world, including The Amazon Rainforest, The Grand Canyon and the Serengeti National Park in Africa - to feature in the new edition of the board game, which is due to come out in the spring of next year.

Members of the public will be invited to have their say on what should be included on the board itself and also come up with ideas for tokens - a pair of walking boots in place of the boot, for example, or a Land Rover instead of a racing car.

Key factors taken into consideration by the games’ bosses in the contest were: ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ ; ‘stunning landmarks’ and ‘tourist appeal’.

John Keen-Tomlinson, Custom Games Executive of Winning Moves, makers of Monopoly, said: “We are very excited by the challenge of putting this unique board for the Yorkshire Dales together.

"With crown jewels like the national park, Bolton Abbey and Malham Cove we expect to be wonderfully spoiled for choices producing this edition of the world’s most famous board game.”

Members of the public have been given to the end of the month to come up with suggestions for more than 30 landmarks to replace the London streets in the classic edition - such as Park Lane, Pall Mall and Leicester Square; and decide on the theme of the Dales set too.

The public is also being asked to come up with suggestions for customised tokens - a pair of walking boots could replace the famous Monopoly boot. A bicycle, a slab of drystone wall and a slice of Wensleydale cheese look other front-runners too. Suggestions are also needed for the 'chance' and 'community chest' cards - such as fines for wild campers without permission, or penalties for dog owners who fail to clear up after their pets.

The game’s designers predict that famous Dales landmarks to feature on the board could include Bolton Abbey, Malham Cove, the Ribblehead Viaduct, Buttertubs Pass, Jervaulx Abbey and Skipton Castle.

Meanwhile, the four train stations are very likely to include Bolton Abbey, Skipton and Settle.

Voting is underway now and will close on August 31. People can send their suggestions by email to: dales@winningmoves.co.uk; or via the official MONOPOLY: Yorkshire Dales Edition game Facebook page.
