PEOPLE in Gargrave have until September 27 to have their say about plans to build a new 'Extra-Care' facility for older people in the village.

Earlier this year, North Yorkshire Council confirmed the long-expected closure of its Neville House Care Home in Gargrave and the building of an Extra-Care scheme off Eshton Road.

It said at the time that the home, in Neville Crescent would close around Autumn time and its residents moved to Ashfield House in Skipton. At a meeting of the parish council in June, it was revealed just six residents remained at the home, which employed 26 members of staff, all of which were to be offered jobs by the council elsewhere. It is not known how many residents remain at the home.

The meeting also heard how the Neville Crescent site could be redeveloped as assisted living accommodation for working age adults, of which there is a great need in Craven.

Extra-Care schemes are usually a purpose-built block of apartments and/or bungalows designed to help people remain independent in their own homes as long as possible. A care team is on site all the time in case of emergencies and schemes can include a restaurant, hairdressers or other facilities.

A public 'engagement event' into the proposed Extra-Care facility was launched earlier this month at the village library, which it is understood was poorly attended, and will run until September 27.

Questions include what facilities people would like to see at a 'community hub' at the scheme, such as a district nurse, bistro or electric vehicle charging; and whether the units should be for general sale, rent or shared ownership.

People are also being asked if they are in support, whether they, or someone they know, would be interested in living there, and whether they have any other comments.

North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for adult social care, Councillor Michael Harrison, said: “Our staff have been working with residents and their families to help people move to new homes where they can receive the care and support that they require. Over the coming weeks, dates for moving are being organised to suit individuals with one person having already moved to their new home. “We are unable to share specific arrangements or dates as these are confidential to the residents and their families.

“Meanwhile, people are being encouraged to have their say by completing a survey to see how the council aims to meet the differing needs of its residents and to help shape the design features and services delivered by Extra Care Housing in Gargrave."
