SETTLE Victoria Hall has wished all its friends and supporters a Happy New Year after its 170th anniversary year comes to an end.

A spokesperson for Victoria Hall, the world's oldest music hall, said: "Our 170th year has seen a bit of everything. We've welcomed new friends, said a sad goodbye to old friends, we've held a three-day punk festival in the pouring rain, and we've filled the hall with everything from bouncy castles to beer festivals, Japanese Heavy Metal, Scottish folk-rock, Malawian Babatoni, and Yorkshire Brass Bands.

"We've juiced barrowloads of apples, served endless teas and cakes to thousands of visitors to our Summer and Winter gardens, and welcomed over 14,000 people to nearly 180 shows and events. Now we're off for a lie down, ready to be back with a bang in January."

The office and cafe closed on December 20 and will reopen on Thursday, January 4. The monthly screening by The Ribblesdale Area Moving Picture Show (TRAMPS) will however take place on January 3 with Cairo Conspiracy - which tells the story of a fisherman's son who is offered the ultimate privilege to study at the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, the epi-centre of power of Sunni Islam.

Shortly after his arrival, the university’s highest ranking religious leader, the Grand Imam, dies and the young student becomes a pawn in a ruthless power struggle between Egypt's religious and political elite.
