THREE members of Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue are preparing to take part in the gruelling Montane Spine Race - described as one of Britain's most brutal endurance races.
Ruth Smith and Tom Parkin will be both taking part in the Spine Challenger South - a non-stop, 108 mile race along the Pennine Way from Edale, Derbyshire, to Hawes, beginning on January 13. Runners have a time limit of just 60 hours to reach the finish.
It will be Tom's first attempt at the race, but the second attempt for Ruth who last year had to pull out half way due to injury. Ruth will be raising money for UWFRA, while Tom will be raising funds for both the team and for Hero Paws, a charity supporting people who have rehomed a retired military working dog.
Also taking part will be Joe Parsons, a twice winner of the MRT Challenger. Joe will be running the MRT Challenge North, open to active members of Mountain Rescue. The 160 mile, non-stop race starts in Hardraw, North Yorkshire on January 15, and finishes in Kirk Yetholm.
Competitors have a time limit of 108 hours to reach the finish. Joe will be highlighting the massive volunteer effort carried out by mountain rescue members. Find out more on the UWFRA Facebook page
