Bolton Abbey

Rector’s message: On this second Sunday after Epiphany, we hear the well-known story of Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding at Cana in Galilee. Whilst this story is best known as the first of Jesus’ miracles, it is also used at wedding services in Church to remind those who are getting married that God is present when they make their vows. However, a Jewish marriage in the first century AD was very different from a marriage service today and reminds us all that marriage has evolved over the centuries can also mean different things to different societies and cultures. As the Church continues to wrestle with marriage let us remind ourselves that, if Jesus was present in Cana in Galilee, he would likely be present at a wedding feast today too.

Horton-in-Ribblesdale

Congratulations: Extended to James Waters of Selside who marked his 18th birthday on December 20 by walking the Yorkshire Three Peaks alone. Storm Pia arrived to accompany him though and some ten hours 57 minutes later James was able to buy his first alcoholic drink at The Crown Hotel in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. At the time of writing £472 has been raised toward James’s target of £500 for Help for Heroes.

Civic service: Every spring many local authorities hold a civic service to mark the chair’s year of office and to give thanks for all who work for their communities. The chair of North Yorkshire Council is Councillor David Ireton who lives in Chapel-le-Dale. However, St Leonard’s church in Chapel-le-Dale is small for the expected congregation so David has asked if St Oswald’s church can host the North Yorkshire civic service on Sunday, April 14, at 10.30am. North Yorkshire is England’s biggest county and stretches from Westhouse to Whitby, Stokesley to Selby. A drive across is three hours so some councillors will be setting off quite early. York is governed separately – the City of York Council is officially simply called York – though an election is planned on May 2, 2024, for a new Mayor of York & North Yorkshire whose role will encompass both these authorities.

Service: A service of Holy Communion will be held at 9am on Sunday in St Oswald’s church, the short and said service will be taking place on the second Sunday of Epiphany and is also Plough Sunday.

Meeting: A meeting will be held in the village hall on Wednesday, January 17, at 7.30pm to see if a gala or other celebrations could be arranged to take place in June. Please come along if you have any ideas for arranging a village event or if you can offer any help in anyway.
