THIEVES broke into a fuel tank in Broughton, near Skipton sometime overnight last week and stole around £1,000 worth of diesel.

Police say the locking mechanism of the tank at a property in Gargrave Road was broken and the diesel stolen overnight on Thursday (January 18) and Friday.

Anyone with any information, or who may have seen something suspicious at the time is asked to call Police on the non-emergency 101 number and use reference number 12240011371, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Police are also urging people with an oil tank to help reduce the theft of fuel by:

* Hide the location of the tank.

* Fit your tank with a padlock or lockable filler cap (closed shackle padlocks are difficult to cut with bolt croppers).

* Secure the oil tank within a cage.

* Install security lights and CCTV cameras.

* Fit an electronic gauge which can activate an alarm or alert you via your mobile phone if the oil level drops unexpectedly.

* Add a layer of gravel around the tank. This is noisy when walked on & can deter thieves.

* Steel tanks are sturdier and noisier to break into than the plastic ones.

* Cover the tank to make it invisible to drones or the satellite images used by Google Maps.
