A SKIPTON poet has set herself a challenge of posting a rhyme a day on X - formerly Twitter - as she approaches a 'big birthday'.

Susan Armstrong-Finnerty, who will be 60 in July, was looking for a fresh challenge, so she did a writing course which advised her to 'do what you love'.

"I have always loved rhyming, when I lived in Hertfordshire I got on local radio a lot with my rhymes, I also used to leave my husband a love rhyme once a day when he commuted to London," said Susan.

Since August last year, she has posted more than 150 rhymes on a variety of subjects including local interest stories, nature and historical figures.

A rhyme on the Samaritans 'Brew Monday' fundraising event got more than 1,500 views and she has also written on the visit of Robson Green to Skipton and the Dales as part of his 'Weekend Escapes' television series. She has also been invited to speak to a meeting of Skipton Rotary Club.

Susan, who has a degree in English Literature and Drama, hopes eventually to perform her rhymes, which she describes as a 'bit Victoria Wood/ Pam Ayres'.

Susan's Robson Green rhyme:

Nowadays, if you visit Skipton, you don’t just get to enjoy the lovely canal.

No, you can also make yourself a famous pal.

First, Hugh Jackman came to call, Now, Robson Green for our charms did fall.

Who will be next to visit our lovely town?

Perhaps the King in his coronation gown.

For it’s clear to all that Skipton is a magical place, Loved not just by us, but now it seems celebs think it’s ace.

So next time you're out for a walk on the towpath, Stop and talk with a stranger, for with Robson or Hugh, you could be having a laugh.
