PROPOSED new masterplans for Earby and Barnoldswick town centres left much to be desired, said West Craven councillors.

Members faced with the two lengthy documents to comment on before their adoption, agreed to take away initial observations and to bring them back to a future meeting of the West Craven Committee of Pendle Council.

Cllr David Whipp, committee chair, said on his viewing of the plans he had noted important omissions, spelling mistakes, evidence of 'cutting and pasting' and the use of 'river' instead of 'beck'.

In the around 90-page Barnoldswick plan, he regretted that there was no mention of health centres, or of West Craven sports centre - two topics of great interest to residents.

He was also unhappy about the text used, adding: "I think its lacking vision, I think we can make a better stab at it."

Last year residents in Barnoldswick, Earby and also Colne, were given the opportunity to attend workshops to consider the draft masterplans and express their opinions and ideas.

Views were taken onboard by PLACED - an independent engagement team employed by the council - and the drafts have been updated.

The masterplans are long-term projects which will guide future regeneration in Colne, Barnoldswick and Earby over the next 10 to 15 years.
