THE Archbishop of York paid a visit to the Yorkshire Dales where he blessed a £1.6 million renovation project at Scargill House.

The Christian retreat and conference centre close to Kettlewell, has been going through a ten-month building project; and the Most Rev Stephen Cottrell, Archbishop of York - and 2024 Yorkshire Man of the Year - visited last week to bless and dedicate the building.

The project, managed by Ilkley-based Dobson Construction, has seen the grade two listed Marsh Lounge renovated, the replacement of windows and the creation of a new car park, with electric vehicles charging points, as well as other work.

The Rev Phil Stone, director of Scargill House said: ‘It was a joy to have our president and friend, the Archbishop of York, visit us to bless and dedicate the building after the completion of the building works.

"Stephen and his family have been visiting Scargill House for many years and so we were delighted that he was able to dedicate the building to God. This building, and the community are here for everyone, and so if you’d ever like to drop in then please just get in touch and we’ll happily show you around."

Scargill House is the home to a residential international Christian community, the community runs conferences, retreats and holidays for people from all over the country.

Some 15 years ago, the centre was closed but has been brought back to life under the leadership of Phil and Diane Stone. As part of that re-birth a long-term programme of building works was devised, including the last phase of work.

The long-term programme has included the installation of a biomass boiler, the upgrading of the residential accommodation, the creation of accessible and en-suite rooms, and the renovation of the 90 acre estate. Gradually the building and the estate are being restored.

There are plans for much more, says the community, but adds its 'one step at a time as the community breathes life into the building and brings visitors to the beautiful part of the Yorkshire Dales'.

There will be an open afternoon at Scargill House on Sunday (March 24) from 3.30pm to 5.30pm, when visitors will be welcome; or find out more at www.scargillmovement.org, on social media, or phone on 01756 760500.
