SKIPTON Youth Council is hoping to inspire young people to tackle litter pollution for a 'cleaner, greener Skipton'.

The youth council has launched a 'Keep Skipton Tidy' competition which, with the promise of a prize of £300, it hopes will encourage groups of young people, from schools, organisations and clubs, or just groups of friends, to go around the town and pick up as much rubbish as they can.

Noah Garbutt, council member, said: "Whether it’s cleaning up local parks, streets or canal banks, volunteers will have the opportunity to contribute to tidying the area. North Yorkshire Council is willing to provide litter pickers with bags to assist with the community litter picks and if necessary, the bags of litter can be arranged to be collected from a suitable location afterwards.

"Skipton Youth Council believe that young people with a determination to make a difference will have a huge positive impact on our local environment in Skipton."

Those taking part will be entered into a £300 prize draw as well as having the satisfaction in helping to clean up the town. The competition runs until June 24.
