Quaker services: Quakers in Airton have regular quiet meetings for worship every Sunday at 2pm in the ancient Quaker Meeting House by the Green in Airton, on Calton Lane. Worship lasts for an hour. All are welcome. Refreshments in the Barn follow each meeting. Drop-in art and craft sessions are held every Thursday 10am to 2pm, and everyone is welcome, whatever their level of creative ability, to come and learn, create, connect with others, and try out something new. The Meeting House is open every day of the week for those who need a place of refreshment and peace in the midst of a turbulent world. Austwick WI: Local artist Hester Cox ran a fabric printing workshop at Austwick WI in April. It was a fun-filled, paint spattered evening with some beautiful results. Austwick Parish Council and Annual Parish Meeting: Monday, May 20, 6pm at Austwick Parish Hall. Time is given at the start of the meeting for electors to ask questions or make statements that relate to the work of the council. This meeting will then be followed by the annual parish meeting at 7.30pm. This meeting will include a presentation by Gary Smith, deputy chief executive and director of conservation and community at the national park. He will talk about the forthcoming ‘Management Plan’ which will set out the park’s priorities and objectives for next five years. All registered electors are welcome to attend and participate. Barnoldswick and Bracewell

Church news: Sunday, May 5, 10.30am - Bracewell will hold a joint service, Holy Communion for Rogation. This is usually held outside in the church grounds, depending on the weather. There will be a picnic afterwards. All are welcome; Wednesday, May 8, 10am until noon, Holy Trinity, Barnoldswick, Cafe and Sacred Space; Thursday, May 9, 10.30am and 7pm, Holy Trinity, Services of Holy Communion for Ascension Day; Friday, May 10, 10.30am until 11.45am, Holy Trinity, Bible Study; Sunday, May 12, 10.30am, Holy Trinity, Service of Holy Communion followed by the annual parish council meeting (APCM) to take place over a served lunch. Bellringing: St Mary Le Ghyll, Barnoldswick, holds bellringing practice on Tuesday evenings at 7pm until 9pm. Second uesday of the month we ring at Whalley Church. We now have eight bells. If you wish to learn come along or email Stuart at Stubells@btinternet.com for more information. New Bellringers are always wanted, age 10 upwards with free training. All welcome, any or no faith.

Ghyll Coach House: The Coach House at Ghyll Church, Barnoldswick, is now reopen for Coffee, Tea and Cakes on Saturdays and Sundays until the end of September. Please come along and support our parish fundraising effort. Delicious homemade cakes.

Play: It is Revue time in Carleton again! This year’s Revue is “That’s Life in the 1970s – Songs, Music and Sketches from the Decade Taste Forgot”. Performers have been learning and practising their songs and lines to bring to the stage a fantastic show full of fun and laughter. There are two performances, the first on Saturday, May 11, starting at 7pm in Carleton Village Hall and the second on Sunday, May 12, at 2pm, both in Carleton Village Hall. Doors open 30 minutes before the curtain. There will be an interval, plus a raffle and programmes will be available. Tickets are £5 each, available from Carleton Village Store. All profits will be going to the charity Homeless not Hopeless.

St Peter’s Church Coniston Cold: On Sunday, May 5, there is a service of Compline Evensong at 4pm to which all are welcome. This is a lovely reflective service with readings, prayers, hymns, and a short sermon. History Group archive exhibition and scanning event: Saturday, May 11, 10am-4pm, at Farnhill Institute. The Farnhill and Kildwick Local History Group is holding an exhibition of items from its archive. In addition to the displays, the group is inviting people to bring along old documents and photographs they may have of the two villages, so that they can be digitally scanned and added to the archive. The event will be free and open to all, with refreshments available.

Village Hall: Saturday, May 18, 2pm - The Golden Age Committee will be holding a Coffee & Cakes afternoon. There will also be a cake stall and raffle to help raise funds towards this year’s trip which will take place on Wednesday, July 3. The annual trip will be heading to Beamish - “Living Museum of the North”, with lunch near Beamish and dinner at Richmond on return. The trip including transport, lunch, and dinner is free for men aged 65 and over and ladies 60 (or both if one qualifies) and have lived in the parish for two years. Long Preston 52nd May Day Fete: Saturday, May 4, 12.45pm on the Maypole Village Green and at Long Preston Playing Fields. The children of Long Preston Primary School will be led down to the Maypole from school by Giggleswick & Settle Brass Band. The children will commence the afternoon by performing traditional Country & Maypole Dances. This year our fate will be held on Long Preston Playing Fields, School Lane. Entry is free. There is something for everyone to enjoy. This is a cash only event. Please note parking is extremely limited. However if you are travelling to the event we have a train station in the heart of the village and an excellent bus service to the village which is currently £2 adult & £1 children per journey.

Little Footsteps: Free playgroup continues every Monday during term time in the Methodist Church from 10am until 11.30am. Come along and have a brew and a biscuit while the little ones play.

Action Climate Emergency Settle and District Green Cafe: On Saturday, May 11, from 10.30am to 12.30pm, at St John’s Methodist Church Hall, free entry. The event will focus on what people can do to make Settle plastic - free with a talk by Rosie Sanderson of the Settle Plastic Free group - including current and future actions and how to get involved.

Settle Parish Church: Thanks to everyone who supported our recent coffee morning for the North Yorkshire charity, Dementia Forward. Last Tuesday Dorothy Bearpark presented a cheque for £415.68, on behalf of Settle Parish Church, to Claire Burke (Support Services Manager, Dementia Forward) at the weekly Dementia Forward ‘Tuesday Café Hub’ held in St John’s Methodist Church Hall, Settle. Afterwards Dorothy enjoyed a cuppa with Claire and Janet Wigfield, a volunteer helper with Dementia Forward. Look out for our next fundraiser for Dementia Forward, Holy Ascension’s chosen charity for this quarter of the year. Due to family commitments we won’t be serving our delicious Bacon Butties on Saturday, May 4. However, butties will be on the menu for Christian Aid Week (May 12-18). Pop into Holy Ascension on Saturday, May 18, between 10am and 1pm for a Christian Aid “Big Brekkie” with our usual menu of tasty treats and your donations will help support families escape the trap of poverty and fulfil their ambitions.
