Airton

Quaker Services: Quakers in Airton have regular quiet meetings for worship every Sunday at 2pm in the ancient Quaker Meeting House by the Green in Airton, on Calton Lane. Worship lasts for an hour. All are welcome to this, the earliest place of non-conformist worship dating from the 1600s. Refreshments in the Barn follow each meeting. Drop-in art and craft sessions are held every Thursday 10am to 2pm., and everyone is welcome, whatever their level of creative ability, to come and learn, create, connect with others, and try out something new. The Meeting House is open every day of the week for those who need a place of refreshment and peace in the midst of a turbulent world. Austwick

Field and Local History Society: Our next talk entitled The Magic of Fungi will be presented by Dr Irene Ridge, and held on Wednesday, May 15, at Austwick Parish Hall at 7.30pm. Admission is free for current members, £3 for guests. The talk will last about 50 minutes, followed by an opportunity to ask a few questions. Following the talk, homemade refreshments will be available.

Austwick WI: Local artist Hester Cox ran a fabric printing workshop at Austwick WI in April. It was a fun filled, paint spattered evening with some beautiful results. Austwick Parish Council and Annual Parish Meeting: Monday, May 20, 6pm at Austwick Parish Hall. Time is given at the start of the meeting for electors to ask questions or make statements that relate to the work of the council. This meeting will then be followed by the annual parish meeting at 7.30pm. This meeting will include a presentation by Gary Smith, deputy chief executive and director of conservation and community at the national park. He will talk about the forthcoming ‘Management Plan’ which will set out the park’s priorities and objectives for next five years. All registered electors are welcome. Barnoldswick and Bracewell

Church news: Thursday, May 9, 10.30am and 7pm, Holy Trinity, Services of Holy Communion for Ascension Day; Friday, May 10, 10.30am until 11.45am, Holy Trinity, Bible Study; Sunday, May 12, 10.30am, Holy Trinity, Service of Holy Communion followed by the annual parish council meeting (APCM) to take place over a served lunch. Bellringing: St Mary Le Ghyll, Barnoldswick, holds bellringing practice on Tuesday evenings at 7pm until 9pm. Second Tuesday of the month we ring at Whalley Church. We now have eight bells. If you wish to learn come along or email Stuart at Stubells@btinternet.com. New Bellringers are always wanted, age ten upwards with free training. All welcome, any or no faith.

Ghyll Coach House: The Coach House at Ghyll Church, Barnoldswick, is now reopen for Coffee, Tea and Cakes on Saturdays and Sundays until the end of September. Delicious homemade cakes.

Upcoming events: Annual Dog Show, Saturday, June 1, at Ghyll Church. This is the second event after last year’s successful turn out.

Bentham

Ewecross Historical Society: Dr Mike Winstanley, chair of the Ewecross Historical society welcomed members and guest speaker Dr Nick Howlett to the annual meeting held in Bentham Methodist Church on April 29. Mike gave a short resume of events and thanked all who contributed to the smooth running of the society. All officers and committee were re-elected – chair Mike Winstanley, vice-chair Edward Huddleston, secretary John Wilson, treasurer Melinda Elder and membership secretary Jenny Charnley. Dr Howlett, a local GP who has written a book, The Medical Casebook of Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson, spoke about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a medical doctor who wrote most of the Sherlock Holmes stories when he was a GP in Portsmouth. Dr Howlett told of Sir Arthur’s local connections; he was married at Thornton in Lonsdale Church and his mother lived at Masongill. The speaker showed slides of the many vessels contrived to alleviate asthma in the late 19th century, as well as photos of Sir Arthur; each of 52 diseases are included in the 52 chapters of the book. The evening concluded with a delicious Jacobs Join supper. Summer outings are planned and the next meeting will be on Monday, September 30.

Coniston Cold and Bell Busk

St Peter’s Church Coniston Cold: On Sunday, May 12, there is a service of BCP Holy Communion at 9.30am to which all are welcome. This is a prayer book service with readings, prayers, hymns, communion, and a short sermon. St Peter’s Church services are normally at 9.30am on the second and fourth Sunday of each month (BCP Holy Communion), and at 4pm on the first and third Sunday of each month (Compline Evensong). Farnhill and Kildwick

History Group archive exhibition and scanning event: Saturday, May 11, 10am-4pm, at Farnhill Institute. The Farnhill and Kildwick Local History Group is holding an exhibition of items from its archive. In addition to the displays, the group is inviting people to bring along old documents and photographs they may have of the two villages, so that they can be digitally scanned and added to the archive. The event will be free and open to all, with refreshments available.

St Andrew’s Church: There will be no service at St Andrew’s on Sunday, May 12. Instead, people are invited to attend a United Parish Holy Communion service at St John’s Cononley, starting at 10am. St Alkelda’s Church: Thursday, May 9, 7.30pm - As part of the Castleberg Benefice everyone is invited to the service of Holy Communion at Settle Parish Church this evening, Thursday, at 7.30pm, to celebrate Ascension Day; Sunday services at St Alkelda’s on May 12 are Holy Communion (BCP) at 8am and Morning Worship at 9.30am. Christian Aid Week begins on Sunday with Afternoon Tea at the Friends’ Meeting House from 3pm-4.30pm. St Oswald’s Church: Sunday, May 12, 9am - A service of Holy Communion for Ascensiontide will be held. Sunday, June 2, afternoon - The Mothers’ Union is aiming to have its ‘Teddy Bears’ Picnic’ at the church. As last year, it will combine with painting more hedgehog and bird boxes. Did anyone have any visitors in last year’s boxes? There were two rooms in each so plenty of space in the Airbnb for mice. Haymaking in the churchyard will probably be left until August to let the flowers seed.

Village Hall: Saturday, May 18, 2pm - The Golden Age Committee will be holding a Coffee & Cakes afternoon. There will also be a cake stall and raffle to help raise funds towards this year’s trip which will take place on Wednesday, July 3. The annual trip will be heading to Beamish - “Living Museum of the North”, with lunch near Beamish and dinner at Richmond on return. The trip including transport, lunch, and dinner is free for men aged 65 and over and ladies 60 (or both if one qualifies) and have lived in the parish for two years. Skipton Beer Festival: Thursday, May 23 to Saturday, May 25 at Skipton Town Hall. Keighley & Craven CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) is delighted to again hold Skipton Beer Festival in the historic town hall. There will be 70 Real Ales on traditional gravity service, plus Real Ale on KeyKeg, and Cider, Perry, prosecco and soft drinks. Food will be supplied by local butchers, Stanforth’s, who will be bringing their award-winning pies. The festival runs from 11am until 10pm on the Thursday and Friday, then from 11am until 8pm on the Saturday. Skipton Choral Society: Free summer workshops on Mondays between 7pm and 9pm from June 3 until July 1. Taking place at Christ Church, Skipton. Each workshop will be different: Sacred choruses on June 3 (Bach, Fauré and Haydn), Will Todd Passion Music on June 10 and OUP Encores for Choirs on June 17 (Name that Tune, Londonderry Air and Tequila Samba). June 24 and July 1 will focus on parts of Brahms’ Requiem (singing in English) and culminate in an informal recital with extra pianist and soloists. Come to them all or just pick the ones you fancy - there’s something for everyone. We’ll be serving refreshments after the workshops, too.
