PLANS to construct a covered storage area for silage at Souber Dairy in Bank Newton, near Gargrave, have been submitted to North Yorkshire Council.

In documents submitted with the planning application, agents for the family farm, it is stated that the steel portal frame agricultural building will be used to house 'ensiled forage' to be used to feed the cattle at the dairy.

The 500 milking cows at the dairy are milked three times each day and the cattle are fed twice a day with diets 'differing between livestock groups'. Youngstock are housed at the family's Crossgates Farm with the dairy herd and calving cattle at Souber Dairy.

Documents state: "The need for the buildings arises out of a requirement to ensure food security and reduce the carbon footprint of the business."
