A gothic melodrama by Gilbert and Sullivan is set to spook and delight audiences next month.

Ruddigore will be performed by the West Yorkshire Savoyards when they make a return to the Victoria Hall, in Settle, on Saturday, September 7.

Audiences can expect music and singing, social satire, and a seasoning of sinister spectres in this slightly spooky lesser-known Gilbert and Sullivan work.

Due to a family curse, a baronet must commit a crime every day, otherwise he will perish.

Trying to escape his fate, he meets dancing sailors, frustrated bridesmaids, and a chorus of ghostly ancestors.

Graham Weston directs, with a professional orchestra conducted by musical director Oliver Longstaff.

Mr Weston, who plays Robin Oakapple, also leads the cast of hand-picked singers and musicians from across the north of England.

Soprano Helen Fieldsend plays Rose Maybud, the object of Mr Oakapple's desire.

Alan Titchmarsh, who has given the West Yorkshire Savoyards his backing, said: "The works of Gilbert and Sullivan continue to inspire and amuse generation after generation of music-lovers and theatre-goers, and the West Yorkshire Savoyards continue to enthral their audiences.

"With Sullivan's tuneful melodies and Gilbert's rapier-sharp wit (Stephen Sondheim considers him the best of all lyricists), coupled with the WYS' high standards, any audience can be assured of a great night out!"

Tickets are £18 for adults and £6 for children under 16, who must be accompanied by an adult.
