More than £17,000 was raised at Austwick's annual Street Market & Cuckoo festival on the May bank holiday Monday.

The cuckoo's omen of good weather was considered to have worked again for the village, with sunny weather accompanying the activities after an initial rainy start.

An Olympic-themed fancy dress parade, led by Settle & Giggleswick Brass Band and circus performer Professor Robanti, began the day's proceedings.

Everyone who joined in was awarded a medal.

Activities included skittles, face painting, Morris dancers, and a Punch & Judy show.

The Austwick Amble Fell Race also took place during the day, with 117 runners in the adult race and 50 in the junior races.

Rupert Allison was first home with a time of 49 minutes and 41 seconds, while his wife was first among the women with a record time of 55 minutes and 59 seconds.

Co-chair of the Street Market Committee, Mark Stickland, said: "I’m proud of our little community and how everyone pulled together to make it such an amazing event, and raising this much money is definitely the cherry on the top.

"Well done to everyone for your fantastic contributions - much needed funds have been raised."

After costs, around £12,000 of funds remained, to be divided between the Village Hall and Playing Fields.

The organising committee wished to thank event sponsors Tarmac, Goad & Butcher, Settle Coal, Venturi Homes, and Aire Valley Glass.

Thanks were also expressed to the other businesses and organisations that gave their support, as well as those in the community who volunteered their time before and on the day to make the Street Market a success.
