A GROUP of walkers had to be rescued yesterday (Tuesday) evening after they took the wrong turn on their way down from Ingleborough.

The three walkers, who were well equipped, called for help after finding themselves cold, and in the dark, heading towards Gaping Gill, Clapham, instead of where they wanted to be, Horton-in-Ribblesdale.

The walkers later showed their appreciation to the Cave Rescue Organisation with a 'generous donation'.

A spokesperson for the Clapham-based Cave Rescue Organisation said the walkers did the right thing by stopping in a safe location, hunkering down, and calling for help.

"Using PhoneFind, our duty controller was able to locate and track the group, who were equipped with head torches and able to continue safely under guidance," said the spokesperson.

"CRO team members met the party at Trow Gill and returned them to their vehicles before transporting them back to Horton."

The spokesperson added: "A great example of why carrying a head torch, keeping a charged phone, and calling for help early can make all the difference.

"We would like to thank the trio for their gratitude, and generous donation they made to the team. We don’t expect every casualty to make a donation but, as a volunteer-run charity, they really do mean a lot and help us remain ready for the next call."
