A CHURCH'S 'poppy project' is nearing completion as the team prepares to unveil its hard work.

The thousands of knitted and crocheted poppies will be draped over Holy Trinity Church, Skipton, for Remembrance Sunday on November 8.

It was nearly two years ago when the idea to create handmade poppies for the church came about.

More than 16,000 poppies have been made by more than 90 knitters and crocheters.

They have been made locally, at regular workshops in Skipton, but also from across the UK, the United States, France and Morocco.

Co-ordinator, Helen Smith, said: “We're getting so close now, but we still have panels to complete before our poppy project installation on November 6.”

The team behind the project is running some extra workshops to make sure everything is finished on time.

They are on Thursday, October 29, from 10am to 4pm at Greatwood Community Centre; Friday, October 30 from 10am to 4pm at Greatwood Community Centre; and on Sunday, November 1, again from 10am to 4pm at Greatwood Community Centre.
