Craven residents can borrow Smart Meters from local libraries to monitor home electricity consumption.

The meters are available on a three-week free loan, just like library books, with a fine for late return.

Every library in North Yorkshire, as well as mobile libraries, will have some of the county’s 200 Smart Meters.

Derek Law, the council’s corporate director of adult and community services, said helping people cut energy costs was useful in the current economic climate.

He said: “The meters also help to lower power consumption, thus contributing to the efforts we all need to make to reduce our carbon footprint.”

The meter records the power consumed in a household, showing how much electricity costs every month. It also measures the reduction when appliances are turned off or turned down.

A graph displays consumption split into day, evening and night periods.
