Craven District Council has successfully bid for a grant of £100,000 from the Government to examine how it is delivering customer services to its residents.

The pot of money will be used to encourage residents to scrutinise the council’s customer services using a “Getting it right” toolkit – a series of forms which are designed to identify key issues. Using the information, the council can assess whether it is offering the most effective customer services and identify practical opportunities where improvements can be made.

Council leader Coun Chris Knowles-Fitton (Con said: “Providing excellent value-for-money services, particularly in the present economic climate, is key to whether a local authority is fulfilling its role properly. We are committed to listening to our residents and this grant will allow us first to measure our service provision, second to learn and understand what would improve them and third, how best to implement the necessary changes.”

Craven is the only council in Yorkshire & Humber to take part in the pilot scheme, which is being run in nine areas of the country. The pilot will run until March 2010.
