Police are warning people in Craven not to carry replica and BB guns in public – or they may face police armed with real guns.
The warning comes after an incident in York when two youths were reportedly seen pointing realistic-looking pistols at passing motorists.
Police deployed many resources, including armed officers. Acting Assistant Chief Constable Tim Madgwick said: “Carrying such guns in public is nothing short of reckless. We treat it very seriously as we have a duty to protect the public and police officers.
"I am concerned that armed officers may be placed in a position where they have to confront an innocent teenager who has not fully thought through his or her actions.
"I urge parents not buy BB guns for teenagers. Mums and dads must realise that they are not ‘toys’. They can cause – and have caused – serious injuries.”
