A powerful film with a strong environmental message is to be screened in Settle.

“The Age of Stupid” showcases at the Victoria Hall on Tuesday at 7.30pm.

The showing of the film, using equipment provided by TRAMPS – The Ribblesdale Area Moving Picture Show – has been organised by the Settle Eco Group and aims to focus on issues of climate change, oil, war, politics, consumerism and human stupidity.

Ted Saunders, of Giggleswick, had the idea to show the film and was backed by his fellow Eco Group members who meet for an eco-night each month.

He said: “It’s a brilliant piece of work with a very serious message which we need to get across prior to the forthcoming Copenhagen Conference.”

In the film, Pete Postlethwaite plays an elderly man living in the devastated world of 2055, watching “archive” footage of 2008 and asking “Why didn’t we stop climate change while we had the chance?” Eco-group member Ann Ambrose said: “Our aim is about raising awareness, not causing mass depression! This is about making informed choices.”

The film will be followed by a discussion and it is hoped this will focus on positive actions residents can take to ensure Settle and the surrounding district becomes more resilient to future changes.

Admission is £5 for adults and £3 for concessions.
