Craven College sports development students Hayley Biancardo and Sarah Pate have been selected to be Craven’s Young Sports Ambassadors.

They were scouted from a number of young people who do volunteer work and help out with sports at different primary schools.

Until 2012, School Sport Partnerships across England will recruit youngsters to take on the role of young ambassadors.

Their aim is to work in their local communities championing sport and promoting the ethos and values of the Olympic and Paralympic movement.

In their second year, Sarah and Hayley will mentor the new intake of young ambassadors.

Hayley, who lives in Cononley, said: “It will give us more opportunities to do different things and we are both looking forward to the challenge of the two years ahead of us.”

Sports tutor Bridget Slater said: “It is a great honour that they have been chosen – both for them and Craven College.

“Both have worked hard to gain this accolade by volunteering in various sporting activities and striving to represent the college in sport.”

Hayley and Sarah, who is from Clitheroe, will be going to York Race Course for a training conference and to meet their mentors.

They will then deliver assemblies and activities in primary schools across Craven.

Not only will they encourage young children to take an active role in sport, but they will also be talking to parents to try to encourage their children to become more active.

By the time the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are held in London in 2012, more than 5,000 young people from across the UK will have been through the Young Ambassador programme, which is managed by the Youth Sport Trust on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Children, Schools and Families.
