A Skipton charity which raises money for the disabled is appealing for donations of goods to sell in its shops.

Skipton and Craven Action for Disability (SCAD) was formed almost 30 years ago by the late Marjorie Charlesworth and started with one small shop in Keighley Road and one elderly minibus.

Since then, the charity has grown and now provides help and assistance to disabled people in and around Craven.

It operates seven minibuses, a wide-beam canal boat and has charity shops in Skipton, Cross Hills, Settle, Keighley and Ilkley. It also operates a low-cost wheelchair hire service from its offices in Newmarket Street, Skipton.

Chief executive Roy Aldread said: “Income raised in the shops goes towards financing the running of the wheelchair-accessible minibuses, collecting members from their homes and taking them to places such as hospital appointments, doctors appointments, dentists, hairdressers etc then returning them home.”

Day trips are also organised and the minibuses take children to special schools around the area.

However, the recession has seen charity shops hard-hit and although the shops are busy, many are running low on stock. SCAD is appealing for people to donate saleable items, which can be collected by calling 01756 701005.

Anyone who would like to become a member of the charity to take advantage of its transport service should ring the same number.
