Farmers and land managers in Craven can learn more about Natural England’s new Uplands Entry Level Stewardship Scheme (Uplands ELS).

Two local meetings are being held to outline the new scheme, which is set to open early in 2010. It will take over from Hill Farm Allowance and is open to all farmers in the severely disadvantaged area of the uplands. It will pay farmers for simple yet effective environmental management that complements sound hill farming practices.

The meetings will cover the basics, such as when and how to apply and how to score the points.

Rachel Webster, of Natural England’s land management advisory service, said: “The opening date is rapidly approaching, so we are encouraging anyone farming in upland areas to come along.”

The meetings are at the Flacon Manor, Settle, on Tuesday October 20, and at Skipton’s Rendezvous Hotel on Tuesday November 3. Both will run from 7pm to 9pm.
