AUSTWICK: Derek and Celia Coultherd, 015242 51215: Bowling Club: Austwick Bowling Club held its penultimate competition of the season on Sunday. This was Coulthurst Trophy competition and it was won by HE Hird, with D Heath as runner-up. This Saturday is Captain’s Day, which is the last competition of the season. Names should be in by 1.15pm for a 1.30pm start. The club will hold its annual end of season dinner at Knight Stainforth on Wednesday, October 7, from 6pm for 6.30pm. Church news: On Sunday, there will be Holy Communion at Austwick and Eldroth at 9.30am and at Keasden at 11am The church choir has now started its weekly practice at the vicarage on a Monday at 6.30pm in readiness for harvest and Christmas. All are welcome. The PCC will meet next Thursday, September 10, at 7.30pm in church and the church plant stall and coffee morning will take place next Saturday, September 12.

BOLTON ABBEY: Priory Church: The services this Sunday are 8am Communion (said), 10.30am Sung Eucharist and 6.30pm Evening Prayer. And, this being the first Sunday of the month, there will also be a liquid family worship at 9.15am. This is a fun service for all the family. On Wednesday there is a said communion service at 10am. All services are the Book of Common Prayer.

Organ recital: On Sunday at 3.30pm in the Priory Church, there will be an organ recital by Jonathan Eyre from Bradford Cathedral. This promises to be a rousing finale to a successful first series. Mr Eyre is sub-organist and assistant director of music at St Peter’s Cathedral, Bradford. Parking will be available at the Priory.

BRADLEY: Liz Zieboll, 01535 636369: Family Show Day: Enjoy a family day out this Sunday at the village’s Family Show Day. Proceedings start with the judging of the fancy dress – anyone wishing to take part should be at the village hall by 12.30pm. The parade will leave the village hall at 1pm and make its way around the village to the playing field. There is a modest fee for entry and money raised on the day is used to help support village organisations. Entertainment includes an inflatable slide, mini motorbikes, duck race, K Rescue Reptiles, Earby Brass Band, tug of war and the BOFRA accredited fell races. New for this year is a performance from May School of Dance. There will also be craft and produce stalls, and hot and cold refreshments will be available. Show exhibits will be on display in the marquee during the afternoon. Entries for the classes will be accepted between 9am and 10.30am and should be collected from the marquee between 4pm and 4.30pm.

Coffee morning: Everyone is welcome at the Methodist Church coffee morning on Saturday. It takes place in the church hall between 10am and 11.30am and includes home baking.

CLAPHAM: Rory-Joe Daniels, 015242 51135: Bank Holiday: Clapham was exceedingly busy over the Bank Holiday weekend. The Gaping Gill winch had been opened to the public for 10 days enabling people to descend the 340ft deep gill, the largest cavern in Great Britain. On Saturday, Craven Pothole Club which organised the winch were forced to close the queue mid-morning due to the high demand to descend with a wait of around six hours to go down. Other things going on in the village included a wedding festival in St James’ Church with a display of wedding dresses through the decades, flowers and other wedding memorabilia. Also, Settle Photographic Group held their annual exhibition in Clapham Village Hall.

Heritage talk: North Craven Heritage Trust will present a talk on the Farrer family, given by Clapham residents Ken Pearce and David Crutchley. This will take place in Clapham village hall on Wednesday, September 16, from 7.30pm. Non-members welcome and entrance is on the door. North Craven Heritage Trust helps to safeguard the distinctive heritage, character and beauty of North Craven.

Church concert: Blazing Guitar and Dancing Harp, a concert with Máire Ní Chathasaigh and Chris Newman, will be held in St James’ Church, Clapham, on Saturday, September 19, at 7.30pm. The concert has been described as “an eclecticism of spirit of adventure that is quite thrilling” by The Times newspaper.

CONISTON COLD: St Peter’s: On Sunday, the church will hold a service of Holy Communion from 9.30am.

Young Farmers: On Saturday, Coniston Cold Young Farmers attended Malham Show and ran a ducking stool. Brave members Charlotte Lancaster, Joe Hudson, Mathew Beresford and Jack Walker risked a dunking in a large trough of cold water while Gemma Darwin and club chairman Cameron Walton encouraged members of the public to throw tennis balls at the target. Members raised £303 for charity. Next week’s meeting is a talk on share farming by John Henderson at the Richard Tottie Memorial Hall.

Make It show: The Make It, Bake It, Grow It show will be held in the village institute on Saturday. Doors will open between 9am and 11am for the delivery of exhibits and between 2pm and 3.30pm for public viewing. The presentation of awards and the auctioning of all the goods will take place at the end. This is a lovely event both for people taking part and for those who come along to see what local people have been able to make, bake or grow.

COWLING: Sale time: New 2U, based at St Andrew’s Church, is holding a week-long end of season sale, starting on Saturday. As the Tour of Britain cycle race will pass by the end of Riley Street at the start of the “King of the Mountain” section up Stoney Bank Road, the church has linked up with the Local History Society and there will be an exhibition at St Peter’s covering “200 years of cycling”, which will be open from 1.30pm to 4pm on Sunday and from 10am to 4pm on Monday. There will be tea, coffee and cakes available and any proceeds will be shared between the History Society and St Peter’s. There will be no exercise class that day. EMBSAY WITH EASTBY: Andrew Wilson, 01729 790197: Barn dance: The barn dance organised by Andrew Ayrton raised £1,400 and this will be split 50/50 between St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds and Manorlands Hospice at Oxenhope. A big thank you goes to everyone who helped set up and run the evening and also to all those who supported the event.

Embsay churches: On Sunday, the Methodist Chapel’s 10.30am service will be led by the Lisa Harper while at St Mary’s there will be an all-age service at 9.30am. At 11.15am there will be a said service of Holy Communion according to the Book of Common Prayer. On Tuesday, St Mary’s will hold a communion service at 10.30am and in the afternoon the church will the open for tea, coffee, home baking and conversation between 2pm and 4pm. With the schools returning, Smiley Faces will resume on Fridays between 1.45pm and 3.15pm for pre-school children their parents, grandparents and carers.

Women’s Institute: The WI meets on Tuesday at 7.30 pm in Embsay-with-Eastby village hall. The speaker will be member Cynthia Kent who, together with slides, will speak on the 100 Year History of the WI. Tea and cakes will be served at the end.

Parish council: The next meeting of the parish council will be held in the village hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday, September 15.

Village Show: The annual Village Show, organised by the Gardening Club, will be held on Saturday. The club is still looking for contributions for the tombola. If you have something to donate it would be helpful if you could leave it in the porch at 12 Dalacres Crescent, Embsay or, failing that, bring it to the village hall on the morning of the show between 9am and 11am. The club – which is for anyone with a garden or an interest in gardens – always welcomes new members. Subscriptions can be paid at the show or at the Friday evening meetings. The £5 annual subscription gives half price entry to the monthly meetings (£1.50) and 10 per cent discounts on plants at Twin Locks Garden Centre.

Horton Café: The next Horton Community Café will take place on in the village hall annexe on Tuesday between 2pm and 4pm. There will be a range of activities, informal learning activities and support in a café-style atmosphere. The activities will include craft workshops, exercise activities and informal advice sessions.

FARNHILL AND KILDWICK: Joyce Wood, 01535 635880: St Andrew’s Church: On Sunday, services will be Holy Communion at 8.15am and Family Communion with Baptism at 10am. Tea and scones will be served from 2.30pm to 4.30pm in the parish rooms and the church will also be open to visitors. This will be the last Sunday the church will be open on Sunday afternoons due to reordering work beginning in the church. Tea and scones will continue each Sunday until the end of September.

Farnhill Methodists: There will be no service this Sunday, but next Sunday, September 13, there will be a service at 10.30am when the preacher will be Rev Ruth Crompton. The final service in the church before it closes will be held on October 11 at 4pm. The monthly coffee morning will be held next Saturday, September 12, from 10am to 11.30am. The church hopes to continue its presence in the village in various ways and monthly coffee mornings will be held on the second Saturday of each month in the Kildwick and Farnhill Institute.

Village Pump: The Village Pump, the over 50s group, will meet in Kildwick and Farnhill Institute on Wednesday from 2pm to 3.30pm. A warm invitation is extended to all those over 50 who would like to join in the fun.

Forest Church: Many people share a passion for nature while feeling unsure about organised religion. The second forest church event is back by popular demand on Sunday for all the family to attend. Stay and Play: The popular Stay and Play session hosted by North Craven Children’s Centre restarts next week and runs every Monday morning from 10am to 11.30am in the annexe of Gargrave Village Hall. Parents along with their children below school age are welcome to attend for a chance to make new friends and join in with fun activities.

Drop-in: Community Energy in Gargrave and Malhamdale (CEGAM) will hold a drop-in event at the village hall on Tuesday between 4pm and 8pm. The event is being organised as part of the nationwide Community Energy Fortnight 2015. CEGAM will explain its mission to promote renewable energy technologies and energy conservation for households and businesses. Visitors will be able to talk to the installers of solar, wind, hydro and biomass projects and get questions answered on how to benefit from these technologies.

Women’s Institute: The WI will meet from 7.30pm on Wednesday in the village hall annexe. The speaker will be Gillian Waters who will give a talk on Guy Fawkes – Yorkshire Man. New members are welcome.

INGLETON: Sue Brown, 015242 41835: Welfare outing: The Ingleton and Thornton Old People’s Welfare committee took 101 people to Millstones near Harrogate, in bright sunshine travelling in Bibby’s coaches. After a delicious hot lunch, the more agile enjoyed various kinds of dancing. A session of bingo took place. A raffle to raise money for Motor Neurone Disease and a local hospice was won by Eunice Preston. Michael Clark thanked the committee for organising the day and also for raising all the money to pay for everything. A jumble sale will be held on Saturday, October 31, to raise money for the Christmas party which will be on Friday, December 11, at the Ingleborough Community Centre.

Memorial concert: The Leigh family returned to Langcliffe to present a concert of songs and sonnets in memory of Jim Hacobian. Jim, known as The Langcliffe poet died earlier this year. Around 60 people attended and £380 was raised towards a memorial stone in St John’s Churchyard.

Sunday teas: Sunday Teas are still being served from 2pm to 4.30pm in the institute. Local charities from the are ready to take over from the Langcliffe “home teams”.

Victoria Hall: Settle Folk Gathering will take place this weekend. All events at the gathering are free but booking is essential as admission is by ticket only. On September 17, Holy Moly and the Crackers will take to the stage for an evening of folky, waltz-y, punky, fiddle flying, Cajun fun with rousing hoe-downs ensuring that you get up and dance. Music of an entirely different genre will be on offer on September 26 when West Yorkshire Savoyards return with their production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic Savoy opera The Gondoliers. Benji Kirkpatrick, from Bellowhead, brings his show Bendrix to Settle on September 27. The first half of the show is Benji’s own material, with the second half entirely dedicated to an exploration of the music of Jimi Hendrix material set against a specially commissioned visual backdrop by Shropshire-based artist Esther Thorpe. This section comprises classic songs by the legendary guitarist, adapted for bouzouki, banjo and mandolin. On September 25 the unusual and critically acclaimed play Beryl – a romance on two wheels will be performed, celebrating the life of Beryl Burton – the greatest woman on two wheels.Yorkshire woman Beryl Burton was five times world pursuit champion, twice road racing champion and twelve times national champion. She was one of the most astonishing sports people ever to have lived. The play tells the story of her life, from working on a rhubarb farm to becoming the best British cycling all-rounder for 25 consecutive years and, in 1967, setting a 12 hour time-trial which has not been broken to this day. Afternoon tea: A new afternoon tea dance is starting in the town hall ballroom. SKIPTON: Holy Trinity: September sees a busy diary at Holy Trinity Church, not least the special service and parade planned on 13th to commemorate the Battle of Britain. And This Sunday sees the return of the monthly family service, All in Church, at 11.30am when the theme will be God’s Creation. An informal service for young families is followed by light refreshments. As usual, Sunday worship begins with 8am Holy Communion, followed by parish communion at 9.45am and an evening service at 6pm. Morning Prayer is said at 9am on weekday mornings and this Saturday, there will be Healing Group prayers at 10.30am and a party of visiting ringers will be trying the bells between 5pm and 6pm. On Tuesday the younger children will Toddle into Church again after the holidays at 2pm, with a story from the Old Testament and members of the Women’s Fellowship will meet at 7.30pm on Wednesday.
