St Andrew’s: The preacher at the Sunday 10.30am service will be Brian Oliver. The 6pm Service will be led by Hazel Edmondson. Choir workshop: Carleton Ladies Choir’s first meeting in the New Year will be a free open workshop. A couple of songs sung in two-part harmony will be learnt during the fun evening.
Alternative coffee: A temporary Coffee Pot will be held at 7 Leys Close from 2pm to 5pm tomorrow and next Friday, January 8. All are welcome and proceeds will go to the church as usual. Coffee Pot will resume at the church on January 15.

Community Library: The library resumes its Story and Singing Sessions for under fives and their parents, grandparents or carers on Wednesday between 2pm and 3pm. These are run by retired nursery school head Claire Toberman and are free.

Rural Association: Chairman Carl Lis welcomed members to the December meeting of the Ingleton Rural Community Association (IRCA). He was pleased to report that the Christmas Bingo had been an enjoyable and successful evening. The late night shopping had also been very good. If anyone requires sandbags, in case of flooding, there will be a list at the centre to inform people who to get in touch with and Carl Lis has some in his garage. The Theatre Group raised £508 at its jumble sale and a big thank you goes to all who helped. Tickets for the pantomime, The Wizard of Oz, will be on sale at the coffee morning at the Centre on January 16. One hundred and thirty people attended the Old People’s Christmas party which went well. There was a large attendance at St Mary’s Church for the carol service. Traditional carols, accompanied by Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Band, alternated with Bible readings from members of St Mary’s and the Methodist Church. The morning nativity play at the Methodist Chapel was excellent. The WI jumble sale will be on Saturday, January 30. A letter had been received from Mary Kendall in thanks for the flowers given to her to mark her retirement from the IRCA after many years.June Healey won £20 in the 200 Club, £10 went to the Swimming Club and Arthur Bateson, William Huck and Linda Tooby each won £5. Next Friday, January 8, at 7pm, the association will show the film, The Water Diviner, at Ingleborough Community Centre.
Jumble sale: Ingleton Cricket Club will hold a jumble sale next Saturday, January 9, at 2pm at Ingleborough Community Centre.

Guided walks: The first walk of 2016 will be a “lucky dip” walk, with the route decided to suit the weather, the conditions underfoot and the fragility of the participants. It is expected, however, that this will be an eight to 12-mile moderately strenuous walk following a circular route, leaving Bingley Station at 9.06am on Saturday. No reservation is necessary, but all participants should ensure that they are appropriately clothed, carry a packed lunch where required and have suitable footwear.

Victoria Hall: The box office is currently closed until Tuesday when it will reopen to sell tickets for the numerous events planned for early 2016. The first of these, The Pitmen Poets, will be staged on Sunday, January 17. The show features four of the North East’s leading champions of musical heritage: former Lindisfarne singer and songwriter Billy Mitchell, renowned singer and instrumentalist Bob Fox, leading exponent of Tyneside song Benny Graham, and much-covered Durham songwriter Jez Lowe. Individually and collectively, they celebrate the triumphs, tragedy, humour and hard times of North-East England’s coal mining tradition in an evening of music, song and spoken word, illustrated by atmospheric archive photography. On Saturday, January 23, Bill Adair returns to compère A Celebration of Burns. Theatre trips: There’s still time to plan a treat for 2016 with two theatre trips being arranged. The first is to the Alhambra Theatre, Bradford, to see Billy Elliot: the Musical. The trip will be to the matinee performance on Thursday, May 19. The price is £66, includes a stalls seat, coach from Settle and gratuities. The closing date for reservations is January 22 as both seats and coach need to be confirmed. A second trip is being arranged to see Matthew Bourne’s ballet Sleeping Beauty at the Alhambra on Wednesday, February 24. This will also be a matinee performance and the price is £40. Photographic Group: Settle Photographic Group will meet at Townhead Court on Monday at 7.30pm. The subject for the evening will be Hoylake International Competition. Hoylake Camera Club holds an annual competition open to anyone in the world, under categories of open colour, open black and white, nature, photo-journalism and photo-travel. Two of the judges will show a sample from this year’s competition and initiate discussions over the winning entries, with members free to comment and ask questions on each. Please note there will be no members’ gallery at this meeting.
Poppy excursion: North Craven Age UK is organising a special trip to view the poppy wave sculpture at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park on Wednesday. The trip will also visit Whitleys Garden Centre at Mirfield. The cost is £9 and to reserve a place contact 01729 823066.
Film night: On Wednesday, January 13, at Victoria Hall, The Ribblesdale Area Moving Picture Show will present a film set in North Yorkshire. Addicted to Sheep is the story of a family’s quest to breed the perfect sheep and follows a year in the life of a tenant farmer and his family. It captures the stunning and stark beauty of the landscape, the hard graft required to survive and, without sentiment, examines the life of the family in this setting. Tickets cost £5 on the door and the film starts at 7.45pm.
Iyengar yoga: Iyengar Yoga sessions will resume next week. There are two sessions on a Monday at Friends Meeting House in Kirkgate. SKIPTON:
Oddfellows: Undercover will provide the New Year’s Eve entertainment at the Three Links Club tonight and there will be a mince pie and a tot of whisky for everyone at midnight (please bring your own supper). The club will be closed tomorrow and will be open again for all its usual events from Saturday.
Holy Trinity: To mark the season of Epiphany, there will be a special Songs of Praise at 5pm on Sunday. You are invited to nominate your favourite hymn for the occasion using a form available inside the church. Sunday services start at 8am with Holy Communion, followed by Parish Communion at 9.45am.
As usual, Morning Prayer will be said at 9am each weekday morning, while mid-week Holy Communion will be at 10.45am on Wednesday.
Women’s Institute: Skipton with Stirton with Thorlby WI’s December meeting began with two reports. Some members had gone through Gargrave’s floods to attend the group carol service at Hellifield which was very well organised. Some members had also attended a visit to Ilkley Playhouse to see the rather unusual play, Steel Magnolias. Members were impressed with the skilful acting and that the cast managed to maintain their American accents throughout. The committee then performed an amusing sketch called the Chinese Tragedy. There followed a Jacob’s Join supper and a Santa dip. The party finished with seasonal wishes and a reminder to members to bring subs to the next meeting on Tuesday, January 19. Meetings take place at the Soroptimist Rooms, Otley Street, Skipton, at 7.30pm.
