BARNOLDSWICK
St Andrew’s: There will be no toddlers this week, with sessions resuming at 9.15pm next Friday, June 10. On Saturday, there will be a Circuit Prayer Breakfast in Baptist Centre at 8am, while on Sunday, the 10.30am service - which includes Holy Communion - will be led by Rev Kes Robinson and the 6.30pm service will be led by Rev Ruth Jackson. On Monday, there will be a trip to HAPPA (Horse and Pony Protection Association in Briercliffe). Meet at 1.30pm at the Baptist Church. Next Friday, there will be Bible study at Woodlands at 7.30pm.

BOLTON ABBEY
Priory Church: The Priory Church will be fully open for this next week while specialist parts are being made for the new lighting scheme. During June, the church is running a photographic competition for visitors to Bolton Abbey. Each week the photographs will be judged and the winner will receive a prize. Summer concert: Bradley Methodist Church will hold a charity concert on Saturday, June 18, starting at 7pm in the schoolroom. There will be a variety of local performers, including the school, musicians from the village and members of Skipton Amateur Theatre Group, who have appeared at Skipton Auction Mart. Tickets are on sale now and are available from Bradley School, the village shop or on the door. Two charities will benefit from the proceeds of the concert - Cancer Research UK and March For Mangoes, set up to support the Kambe Timboni Community in Kenya.
School news: Congratulations go to the year five and six football team, who won the trophy in the local schools football tournament last week. Meanwhile, the cricket team has won the first round of the schools’ cricket tournament, playing against local schools. It will now go on to compete in the semi-finals next week. Airton and Cracoe classes (classes one and two) had a visit from The Bug Lady last week, when they handled stick insects, cockroaches and snails. Continuing the bugs theme, Linton class (class four) enjoyed a visit to Wycoller Park where they took part in pond dipping – sticklebacks, snails, snail eggs, tadpoles and whirligig beetles were just some of the creatures they found and examined through a magnifying container.

CARLETON
St Mary’s: The Coffee Pot will operate from 2pm to 4pm tomorrow. St Mary’s Gift Day will be held between 10am and noon on Saturday. On Sunday, a BCP Holy Communion will take place at 8am followed by a family service at 11am which will commemorate 100 years since the Battle of Jutland. Several men from Carleton lost their lives, and Christopher Pattinson will speak about the battle on behalf of the Royal Naval Association.
Gala day: Carleton will hold its annual gala on Saturday when there will be lots of fun for all the family. The procession starts from The Swan at 1pm and activities on the Rec from 2pm. There will be contests for handicraft, baking, fancy dress, pets, Iron Man and more.Baking contributions for the tea tent will be very welcome and should be taken to the village hall on the morning between 10am and 12 noon. There will be a free-entry Carleton Gala Night party in the village hall from 8pm. Entertainment will be provided by None of the Above.
Sports day: Carleton Family Sports Day will take place on Sunday from 2pm on the Rec. There will be lots of races for all ages, plus the Iron Woman and Iron Teen contests. Other attractions include a barbecue with bar plus tea and cakes.
Monday Club: On Monday, award-winning gardener John Foley from Holden Clough Nursery has been re-booked and will speak on Spring into Summer with Success in the village hall from 7.30 pm. New members (ladies) welcome for the special price of just £2. There will be plants for sale so please bring extra money and a bag.

Art exhibition: There is still time to visit Clapham Art Group’s exhibition in Clapham Village Hall. It was opened at a packed preview evening by member James Innerdale and runs until Sunday. It is open from 11am to 6pm each day with homemade refreshments in aid of Clapham Church.
Parish council: At the annual meeting of the parish council, Colin Price and John Dawson were re-appointed as chairman and vice-chairman respectively. The council has completed the first stage of its audit of account and procedures for 2015-16. Residents will be able to inspect the accounts and related documents between Monday, June 6, and Friday, July 15. More details will be displayed on the parish noticeboard and webpage. Thirty people watched the beacon being lit at Bowland Knotts to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. Councillor Kay was thanked for constructing the beacon which was quite spectacle. The parish council is recruiting a new parish caretaker. Councillor Dawson has been in discussions with several candidates and hopefully a new caretaker will be in post soon. The parish council meets in the village hall on the fourth Tuesday of each month except August and December at 7.30pm.
Garden party: Don’t forget the garden party taking place at Hall Garth on Sunday between 1pm and 5pm to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday. Entry will be £3 for adults and £1 for children. There will be numerous stalls, refreshments, a raffle and a ‘creative crown competition’ (for all ages). All the funds raised will go to local causes.

Embsay churches: On Sunday, St Mary’s Church will hold an all-age worship at 9.30am followed at 11.15am by a Book of Common Prayer communion service. The Methodist Chapel’s Sunday service at 10.30am will be led by Eileen Appleby. On Tuesday, St Mary’s will hold a quiet communion service at 10.30am with tea and coffee served afterwards and from 2pm to 4pm the church is open for tea, coffee, home baking and conversation.
Parish council: The planning working party has worked hard on its response to the Government Planning Inspectorate in connection with the proposed development on Shires Lane/Low Lane by the Chatsworth Estate. No word has yet been received relating to the Laurel Croft appeal. As well as attending the monthly Craven District Council planning committee meeting in Skipton, the working party also ventured to Bainbridge on a fact-finding mission to see how the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority conducts its planning meetings. Funding contributions have been approved for Embsay-with-Eastby Pre-school Play Group and the Good Neighbours Scheme. The parish council is also investigating the availability of a grant towards a scheme to help alleviate the ongoing issue of animal fouling in the recreation ground. A small band of volunteers under David Lovell and Cllr David Hill undertook to clear the approach to and within the woods from the Cavendish path, and found 18 bags of accumulated rubbish. The Embsay entrance is undergoing its spring overhaul thanks to Cllr Stella Kirkbride and her helpers and this along with the bunting recently put up around the village and village hall is making a cheerful prelude to the proposed events to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday on June 11 and 12.
Thursday bus: Keelham Farm Shop is running a free Shopper Hopper bus service between Embsay and the shop every Thursday. The bus will drop off and pick-up at the bus stop outside the shop on Gargrave Road. It will leave the village hall at 10.03am, 11.28am, 12.58pm and 2.23pm. Help will be provided should you need it. In Embsay, the bus will also pick-up at the end of Brackenley Lane and at Crossbank.
Village Show: Embsay-with-Eastby Village Show will take place on Saturday, September 3, from 2.30pm in the village hall. Categories include flowers, fruit and vegetables, baking and preserves, handicrafts and photographs as well as children’s sections. Schedules are available at the Post Office and Library.
Flower Club: On Tuesday, members will have a practical evening in the village hall led by floral demonstrator Janine Grey. It will start at 7.30pm with tea and biscuits around 9pm.

Book fair: The North West Book Fair will visit Gargrave Village Hall on Saturday from 10am to 4pm. For a nominal entry fee, there will be hundreds of books on offer and refreshments will be available throughout the day.
St Andrew’s Church: On Sunday, there will be a traditional BCP Communion at 8am, a Sung Eucharist at 10.45 and then at 6pm there is the first Voices of Craven concerts. It will be a recital by local-born international soprano Sarah Fox, who was educated at Giggleswick School, London University and the Royal College of Music, and is an honorary fellow of Royal Holloway College. She will go through the many musical genres in her recital, including pieces by Purcell, Fauré and Strauss, Vaughan Williams, Benjamin Britten, and Cole Porter. Among the audience will be Bishop Nick Baines, who is now Bishop of Leeds.

Open gardens: The village is looking forward to another memorable Open Gardens on the Queen’s birthday weekend, Saturday, June 11. There are some exciting new gardens in the mix this year and live music throughout the village including Skipton Music Centre’s Big Band, the Fairfax Singers and Grassington Handbell Ringers. Liz Hunt, the spiritual gardener, will be hosting an Informal Gardeners’ Question time at the Dalesman Cafe (which includes garden A) from 11am to noon and from 4 to 5pm. In between she will be walking the gardens and answering queries - look out for the lady with the sunflower! Advanced tickets are on sale at £4 at Crossgates (North Street) and Twin Locks. Big Dig: The Archaeological Big Dig in Long Preston will resume this weekend. There will be four more pits dug on Saturday and Sunday in areas already found to be of particular interest. RIBBLEHEAD
Jericho Experience: Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line are hosting a series of events explaining more about the real experience behind the TV series, Jericho. The first of these takes place today and participants should meet at the Ribblehead Visitor Centre on Ribblehead Station at noon. At the visitor centre talks and informal discussions about Jericho shanty town and the surrounding area will take place. There will be several display boards, pottery pieces and glassware found in the shanty town area. The group will then walk to the Ribblehead viaduct along a stony track. Interpretation of the shanty towns area will be explained. The group then returns to the visitor centre for 1.45pm in time to catch the 2.05pm train to Garsdale Station (fare payable on the train or at a staffed station). On the journey north the actual Jericho site will be pointed out. There will be a tour of Garsdale Station looking at the bronze statue of Ruswarp and the interpretation display boards. The return journey back to Ribblehead will be via the 3.13 train from Garsdale (destination Leeds). The tour is free of charge. Please bring a packed lunch. Drinks can be purchased at the visitor centre. Strong shoes are advisable, and waterproofs in case of bad weather. Kwezana link: Pupils in class five at Settle have been studying the importance of water and have used this as a focus for their creative writing. They have sent a number of their own poems to Kwezana. This is a particularly relevant topic for the Kwezana school, as the area regularly suffers from periods of drought. Settle School has helped them in the past year to purchase tanks to store water to enable them to continue to grow crops in the school gardens during periods of drought.
Volunteer opportunities: From today, there will be a volunteer available in Settle Library every Thursday afternoon to assist with information about volunteering opportunities. Victoria Hall: Tonight, there will be drama with the return of Reform Theatre Company who will perform a brand new comedy, The Debt Collectors, by John Godber. It mixes money and love with the love of money, as two out-of-work actors fall into the world of debt recovery. Saturday blends live performance with cinema with the screening of Harlem Street Singer, a film about the Reverend Gary Davis, followed by a solo performance from New Yorker Woody Mann, who plays a mix of American acoustic blues, roots and jazz guitar. On June 10 there will be a visit from Sam Carter, winner of the Radio 2 Folk Award for best newcomer. This is part of the tour to launch his new CD, How the City Sings. Gallery exhibition: The gallery is currently staging an exhibition of silk paintings by local artist Christine Carradice. Her paintings, which are popular at the Dales National Park shops, are inspired by the Dales, but never have people in them as she prefers to show the quiet time before people arrive and the day’s activities begin. Coffee Pot: Each Tuesday St John’s Methodist Church holds a ‘coffee pot’ session with home-made cakes in the coffee lounge. This is open to all and runs from 10am to noon. On the first Tuesday of the month the coffee pot is held in aid of a charity chosen by a member of the congregation. The charity on Tuesday is Smile Train. This is an international children’s charity that provides free surgery to children who suffer from cleft lips or palates in more than 85 developing countries.
Settle Saunter: The eighth annual Rotary Settle Saunter takes place next Saturday, June 11. There are four routes on offer (nine, 12, 16 and 22 miles) to accommodate a wide range of abilities. The routes can either be walked or run and will take in picturesque rural villages and hamlets and swathes of countryside. There are checkpoints with light refreshments along the way and a hot savoury meal is provided at the end. Youngsters under 18 are most welcome on the three shorter routes but safeguarding rules do apply. Entries can be made in advance or on the day (an additional £1 surcharge applies) and the entrance fee is £12 per person, but group and age concessions are available. This year the funds raised will be shared between Settle Swimming Pool, Clapham Cave Rescue Organisation and Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Registration, start and finish on the day is at Victoria Hall. Craven Voices: Communities in Chorus is a project across the area in which local singing groups have come together to sing, coached by Tom Leech, the director of the diocese of Leeds singing programme. Throughout June there will be a series of concerts by local professional soloists and musicians culminating in a grand finale where all will perform together. On June 13, Sarah will return to her home ground to perform in a ‘Last Night of the Proms-style concert celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday, at St Alkelda’s Church in Giggleswick. On June 22 there will be an evening of Community Singing at Holy Ascension Church, Settle, with John Bell of the Iona Community. The grand finale is a concert at Giggleswick School Chapel on June 25 which will feature local choirs and a small orchestra.
The Folly: Next Sunday, June 12, at 1.30pm there will be a special World War One centenary cricket match at Settle Cricket Ground between Settle and Skipton. The match commemorates a match played near the front line at Fleurbaix in France in June 1915 by the men of the 1/6th Battalion of the Duke of Wellington’s (WR) Regiment in 1914-16. All are welcome.
Amnesty International: The next Amnesty letter writing session will take place at Friends Meeting House in Kirkgate on June 15 from 5pm to 8pm. Individuals are invited to come along and write a letter to assist in Amnesty’s work. Details are provided of cases and help is given with letter writing. For further details contact 01729 268912.
Photographic Group: The group meeting on Monday, June 20, will be a members’ discussion night on the topic of What do we do with our Images? This will take place at 7.30pm at Townhead Court and it is hoped that the discussion will include a pooling of ideas for options for collating, organising and viewing photographs. The theme for the gallery will be Reflections.
Settle Stories: Renowned Belgian storyteller and musician, Iwan Kushka, will visit the town to present True Moon Tales - a story-concert for adults. He will be joined by guitarist William Benzies and violinist Becky Doe. This event will take place on June 24 at the Royal Oak, 7.30pm.You may also like to attend Iwan’s workshop on Saturday, June 25. Flowerpot Festival: Everyone is invited to help brighten up the town ready for the annual flowerpot festival in July. The festival aims to involve local organisations, businesses and individuals in the hope of raising a smile by decorating the town with quirky flowerpot characters. It is hoped to have all displays in place by June 25 so that a full town trail can be drawn up.
Silent Auction: There will be a silent auction in Settle, providing a chance to invest not only in a piece of art but also in the future of the young people in the town. Settle Scouts are currently fundraising to improve their Drill Hall premises and make them available to the community. They’ve teamed up with a number of local artists for a special silent auction which will take place on June 25, from 11am to 5pm. There will be refreshments served throughout the day, with arts and crafts activities for young people.

Coffee and cakes: The next Coffee, Cakes and Cameraderie will be held at Silsden Methodist Church on Saturday. It will start at 9.30am and finishes about 11.30am. Refreshments include homemade cakes and bacon sandwiches and there will be several stalls to browse for bargains.
Fun of fair: All the fun of the fair will be on offer at St James’ Church next Saturday, June 11. Attractions include fairground games, wet sponges, brandy snaps and hot dogs plus music by Fresh Air. Go along for some fun and games between 11am and 3pm.
Cream tea: A cream tea will be held at 41 Foster Avenue, Silsden on Saturday, July 9, from 2om to 4.30pm with funds raised going to St James’ Church.
Gala procession: Entry forms are available for this year’s gala procession. Why not get together with a group of friends and join in. Classes are: vehicular floats, gala queens and walking groups. There is a form on the gala facebook page ‘Silsden gala’ for anyone interested and the gala will be held on Sunday, July 31. Entries need to be in by July 1.
Outer Space: On Saturday, there will be an event in the town hall for children aged between six and 11 who have been inspired by the exploits of astronaut Major Tim Peake. Venture into Outer Space is organised by Keighley Astronomical Society and sponsored by the Friends of Silsden Town Hall. There will be two workshops - rocket building and how big is big, which involves making a planisphere to map the night sky. Booking is essential and the cost is £4 per child who must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets and information leaflets are available from Twiggs newsagents, Kirkgate, Silsden, and ticket numbers are limited.

SKIPTON
Holy Trinity: On Sunday, there will be a Holy Communion at 8am, a parish communion service at 9.45am and the monthly all-in-church family service at 11.30am. On Sunday at 6pm, to coincide with the Classic Car Show on Skipton High Street, there will be a Songs of Praise service on the theme of journeying. On Tuesday, the Toddle into Church will take place in the vestry rooms between 2pm and 3pm and on Wednesday there is Holy Communion at 10.45am. The Coffee Shop is open from 10am to 2pm, Wednesday to Friday, and the café, with its wider menu, on Saturday from 10am to 3pm.
Christ Church: Family Eucharist will be celebrated in Christ Church on Sunday at 9.30am and Evening Prayer at 6.30pm. The regular weekly service of Holy Communion will take place at 9.30am on Wednesday. Christ Church Brownies meet on Wednesdays during term-time between 6.15pm and 7.30pm.

Car boot sale: A car boot sale will be held in the west car park at Airedale Hospital on Sunday. It will run from 7am until lunchtime. Just turn up to buy or sell with free parking for buyers.

Celebratory coffee: St Oswald’s Church invites you to enjoy the Queen’s official 90th birthday at a celebratory coffee morning next Saturday, June 11, from 10.30am to 12.30pm. It will include visual display, music and cakes and proceeds will go to St Oswald’s general fund.
Flower festival: A flower festival will be staged at St Oswald’s Church from Friday, July 1, to Sunday, July 3, from 10.30am to 4pm. Refreshments and cream teas will be available each day.

Guided walk: Participants on Tuesday’s Linton Heritage Trail should meet at Grassington National Park Centre at 2pm. There they will be joined by experienced Dales Volunteers, who will lead the easy 4.3-mile walk, discovering local geology and the village’s connections with the plague, the Great Fire of London and Castle Howard. Plant fair: A plant fair and table top sale will be held in Cracoe Village Hall on Sunday from 10am to 2pm. Refreshments will be served and there will be various stalls and a tombola. Local History: The Rylstone Local History Group will meet on Tuesday, June 14.
Church fundraiser: The next fundraising event for Hubberholme Church will be a musical workshop by Scargill House musicians on Saturday at 4pm. It will be followed by a concert at 7.30pm.
Scarecrow workshop: A scarecrow workshop will be held at Kettlewell Village Hall on Sunday, July 17. This year’s scarecrow festival will run from August 13 to 21.
MU Service: A service of thanksgiving to mark the end of Linton Mothers’ Union group, which has given many years of service in the parish, will be held on Wednesday, June 15, at 7pm in St Michael’s Parish Church. It will be combined with the Deanery Festival. Past and present Mothers’ Union members are invited to join the congregation.

WIGGLESWORTH
Community Centre: A paediatric first aid course was held last week. Sean was going to do a canine first aid course this week but low numbers meant he had to cancel. He will put one on in the near future if enough people are interested. Last week’s whist and dominoes winners were: dominoes - A Sutcliffe, P Metcalfe, D Knight, J Oddie, M Briggs, P Oddie; whist - A Pike, M Davies, A Dinsdale, H Richmond, M Davies and T Pike. Last Thursday’s ladies walk took in Oxenber Woods, Austwick. The flowers were spectacular in the evening sun and everyone enjoyed the walk. Today, Sheila is leading a local walk, meet either at the Old School at 7.20pm for a lift to Rathmell or go straight to Rathmell and park in the village car park. The walk starts at 7.30pm. Bacon Buttys are on the menu on Saturdays and volunteer helpers are still needed for the end of June, July and August. The Queen’s birthday party will go ahead next Saturday, June 11. Do come along from 4pm and bring a bite to eat to share with friends and neighbours.
