A HISTORIAN has used laser scanning technology in publishing a new book digging deep into the archaeology history of East Lancashire, including parts of West Craven.
Hillforts, Homesteads And Habitats In The East Lancashire Pennines has been released by Pendle landscape historian John Clayton after four years of research.
He used aerial laser scanning technology to cover the origins of the settled landscapes of Pendle, Burnley, Rossendale, Ribble Valley and the former West Craven districts.
The book looks at the period from 2,500 BC to the end of the Roman era in 410 AD.
He said: “There is a common misconception that the ancient history of East Lancashire was confined to roaming savages beating each other over the head with massive wooden clubs.
“The new discoveries include hillforts, enclosed settlements, farmsteads, ritual sites, burial sites, lost villages and Romano-British features.”
Published by Barrowford Press, the book is available from Pendle Heritage Centre and amazon.co.uk
