THERE were three letters in your paper last week (Craven Herald, January 14) that made depressing reading.

It is so easy for the Government's political opponents to sit on the sidelines and criticise the Government's actions on coronavirus.

Dr McLeod's letter was particularly objectionable.

There has been no evidence of, as he describes it, 'profits before people' in the Government's actions. In fact, just the opposite. Billions of pounds of taxpayers' money has been spent to save jobs, save businesses and help those on benefits.

Though necessary, all of this will cost our country going forward and take years to recover from.

At least, we do now have some light at the end of the tunnel with the roll-out of vaccines at a tremendous rate to date, indeed the best in Europe.

The Government has faced the most difficult situation faced in recent peacetime history and has had to balance fighting coronavirus and protecting the economy and other health needs. Although there may have been some mistakes in these unprecedented times by advisers, experts or politicians along the way, left-wing views such as those expressed by Dr McLeod contribute little to the debate.
