DURING the past year we have heard nothing but praise and admiration for the NHS.

That is, until Wednesday February 10 when the Guardian newspaper quoted a report produced by the Institute of Economic Affairs which stated “there is no rational basis for the adulation the NHS is currently receiving, and no reason to be 'grateful' for the fact that we have it.”

The IEA report described goes on to suggest possible alternatives, such as insurance-based systems.

This I find chilling. It is not for nothing that the NHS is so highly regarded by the rest of the world.

An insurance based system would exclude those who cannot afford to pay the premiums: the very people the NHS was set up to serve.

It was also reported that Matt Hancock, Secretary of State of Health, was recently in receipt of a £32,000 donation from the IEA. It needs to be asked why he took it and what he plans to do with it.

The NHS has rolled out a Covid 19 vaccination programme that is truly inspiring.

They are doing this for all of us, and they are able to do it because they are experts.

Such expertise is hard won and must never be taken for granted or sold from under us.
