ALL ten ambulance services across England have now declared a “critical incident” due to unrelenting pressure across NHS services. There are record waiting times for surgery. Schools are enduring their worst ever recruitment and retention crisis. Our privatised and deregulated public transport is the most expensive in Europe. Not to mention the environmental and cost of living crises.

Yet every one of the candidates for the leadership of the Tory party are promising tax cuts. I wonder which public services will bear the brunt of the further cuts necessary to fund these tax cuts. Surely it’s time for an end to punitive cuts to public services and the bizarre notion that it’s somehow possible to have top quality services on a shoestring.
