Leeds Carnegie rising star Jack Walker, 16, has received national recognition for an incredible year that has seen him play international rugby above his own age group and learn skills from World Cup-winner Jonny Wilkinson.

Walker, a pupil at Prince Henry’s Grammar School, Otley, was joined by his proud parents John and Suzanne at The Savoy in London to attend the Jaguar Academy of Sport Awards, where he was one of five young athletes who received Special Recognition Awards for their sporting achievements.

Hooker Walker, who comesfrom Settle and began his playing career with North Ribblesdale, said: “It was an incredible experience and a really proud moment to be around people like Jessica Ennis, Denise Lewis and Sir Steve Redgrave.

“Gareth Edwards presented me with the award, which was special considering what he has achieved in my own sport.

“I have been part of the Jaguar Academy of Sport for the past year. I received a bursary of £2,000, which has helped me with my training commitments.

“I was also fortunate to travel to France to spend time with Jaguar ambassador Jonny Wilkinson back in August along with Wales Under-20 player Matthew Screech.

“That was unreal, Jonny was a nice guy and he has incredible skills. He spent a lot of time with us and taught us lots of ways we can think about improving our game.”

Walker will receive one-to-one mentoring as part of the programme, organised by Kelly Holmes Education.

On top of his international and club commitments, Walker has been leading Prince Henry’s in their strong campaign. His older brother Chris also plays for Leeds Carnegie
