The team – which also included Peter Reed and Alex Gregory – had won their repechages on Saturday to qualify for the final.

Helen Glover and Polly Swann took gold to make it a hat-trick of titles in 2013.

The British crew led the women’s pairs final from the front, holding off New Zealand to add another win to their triumphs in Eton Dorney last month and Sydney in March.

On Saturday, Sam Scrimgeour and Mark Aldred won gold in the lightweight men’s pair.

British brothers Peter and Richard Chambers added a bronze in the lightweight men’s double scull yesterday but Kathryn Twyman and Imogen Walsh were rowed out of a bronze in the lightweight women’s double scull final, while the lightweight men’s four came fifth.

Elsewhere, the women’s eights came home fourth in their final, Frances Houghton and Victoria Meyer-Laker were fifth in the women’s double scull, Alan Campbell was sixth in the men’s single scull, as were Bill Lucas and Matt Langridge in the double scull, while the men’s quadruple scull took fourth.
