JACK Smith conquered the treacherous conditions to win the BOFRA Coniston Gullies race.

The Wharfedale Harriers runner, who was third last year, recorded a time of 14min 45sec as he came home 14 seconds ahead of Jimmy Craig from Barlick Fell Runners. Third place went to Chris Edis (Keswick) in 15:22.

The first lady through the finish funnel was Katherine Spurden (Keswick) in 18:06.

She was followed home by Emma Hopkinson (Wharfedale Harriers) in 19:31 and Hannah Russell (Helm Hill) in 19:35.

The under-17 race took a slightly different, though equally challenging, route over the fell and saw Joshua Boyle (Blackburn Harriers) win in 9:08.

Thomas Nelson of Wharfedale Harriers was second for the second-successive year in 9:14, with Joe Edmondson (Broughton Runners) coming third in 9:32.

The first girl was Katherine Lawson (Helm Hill) in 11:20, repeating her win of 2014.

Ellie Lambert from Wharfedale Harriers was second again in 11:59 with Georgia Stevens (Helm Hill) third in 13:30.

Victory in the under-14 boys race went to Ben Edmondson (Broughton Runners) in 5:09.

Robert Askew (Helm Hill) was second in 5:11 with Thomas Marshall (Settle Harriers) coming third in 5:22.

The under-14 girls race saw Briony Holt (Clayton le Moors) repeat her win of 2014 in 5:49.

Katie Thurlow (Helm Hill) was second in 5:57 and Wharfedale Harriers’ Emily Jones came third in 6.26.

Wharfedale’s Alex Thompson led the under-12 boys home in 4:14 with James Bowen (Ambleside) second in 4:18 with his twin brother Harry third in 4:24.

Charlotte Barrett made it an under-12 double for Wharfedale Harriers by winning the girls race in 4:51.

Emily Swarbrick from Broughton Runners was second in 5:06 with Beth Roberts (Keighley and Craven) finishing third in 5:18.

Victory in the under-nne race went to Alex Graham (Broughton Runners) in 2:51.

He was closely followed by the girls winner Bethan Saunders (Hoad Hill Runners) in 2:55 in a competitive race which was a real battle of the sexes.
