Barnoldswick Town 3 Ingleton 2 aet

The Slater Marchant Craven Challenge Cup final sponsored by Smart and Cook produced a entertaining game at Settle United to keep the large crowd on their toes to the final whistle. Three goals in the first six minutes set the pace of the game. Town's Chris Gaskell showed good footwork in the Ingleton penalty area to beat a defender before swivelling and scoring.

This stung Ingleton who levelled matters with a bizarre goal within a minute when Carson attempted a back pass to keeper Ian Clarkson and a bad bounce resulted in a mis-kick and the ball trickled over the line. Ingleton struck again through Jonathan Boadle when a long throw was flicked on to the far post and he was on hand to score.

Play settled down to some kind of normality with Ingleton playing the long ball while Town were more suited to the passing game. Half-time arrived with a 2-1 scoreline. Good defending from both sides kept chances to a minimum. Barnoldswick levelled when a Justin Wilson corner created havoc in the Ingleton defence resulting in an own goal when a defender was put under pressure.

A double substitution by Town appeared to give them more options and were now on top and their pressure was rewarded when a penalty for hand ball was awarded with four minutes remaining.

Daniel Paton scored only for the referee to order a retake and whether this unsettled Paton or not Ian Kellett pulled off a save to ensure extra-time.

Ingleton were awarded a penalty only for Ingleton captain Phil Eccleston, who had an outstanding game, to hit a poor kick that Clarkson saved with ease.

Clarkson was playing with a broken collar bone after a collision in extra-time unknown to the crowd although play had been held up while he received prolonged treatment.

The penalty save was the spur for Barnoldswick to apply late pressure and Paton skimmed the bar with a header and with thoughts of a replay in everyone's mind Town scored the winner with barely a minute left. James Oldroyd soared high to head home Wilson's corner.

Barnoldswick had already secured promotion under Manager Paul McDowell and it was the first time any one could recall a second team winning the Craven Cup. Daniel Paton was The Ronnie Jones Man-of-the-Match.
