THERE were some strong pairings at Settle this weekend with competitors looking to get their hands on the Harold Lambert Four-ball Betterball Trophy.

Current club captain Stephen Robinson teamed up with Chris Ward and they would certainly have been the favourites. However, it was the Mike Elstub and Peter Morton who produced an excellent round which contained just the one bogey.

Their final score of 39 stableford points set a formidable target for the remaining pairs to chase.

Robinson and Ward were up to the challenge, playing some superb golf over the front nine. Their two birdies and four pars helping them to reach the turn with 22 points.

Their back nine was not of quite the same quality but they did manage to add a further 18 points, giving them a one-point victory.

Earlier in the week mixed pairs competed for the Butterfield Cup.

This is a foursomes game where the players take alternate shots throughout the competition, a format designed to test the strongest of relationships.

Anne and Peter Morton simply complemented one another throughout the competition, finishing with a comfortable victory and taking the trophy.
