IT was a poor turn-out for the Skipton Angling Association’s second Peter Hart Memorial match held on the Sawley Street length of the canal last Sunday.

Conditions were once again good on what turned out to be the warmest day of the year so far with a temperature of 28.1C.

Sport was reasonable with plenty of small roach and perch throughout the three hour match. Only one big fish was caught, a splendid perch weighing approximately 750g.

Russell Heaton and Ernie Ramsbotham shared the top honours with 845g each. Simon Chenier was third with 445g and Graeme Waterfall fourth with 415g.

In the competition for the memorial trophy, Russell Heaton consolidated his lead with 34 points with the following some way behind: =2, Mark Bradley and Ernie Ramsbotham 20; =4, Simon Chenier and John Leatt 18 and 6, Graeme Waterfall 16.

Two matches remain to be fished, Embsay Reservoir on August 12 and Whinnygill Reservoir on September 9.

The hot weather is continuing to affect sport and the early morning and late evening appears to be the best time for fishing.

During the day, most of the bigger fish are deep down to get out of the bright sun. Sinking lines and a slow retrieve of a lure is recommended for Embsay Reservoir.

Small fish are providing most of the sport at Whinnygill Reservoir with catches of up to 30 perch in a session fishing small lures. A decent sized tench has finally been caught but the rest of them appear to be wily.

Mark Hindle reports that he has seen plenty of fish basking in the sun including four groups of carp, seven large shoals of roach, perch, ide, rudd and bream plus thousands of fry.

A working party is scheduled for this Saturday at Embsay Reservoir to remove old broken pipes and rework the beck tributaries with the aim of improving brown trout spawning capabilities.

Please meet at the reservoir for around 10.00 am. The event is open to anyone interested in giving a helping hand.

This Sunday’s summer league match will be fished on the Long Ing length of the canal at Barnoldswick, with the draw at 7.00am.
