SKIPTON’S Club Championship final produced an epic battle between Matt Ryder and recently-crowned Yorkshire match play champion Max Berrisford.

The first 18 holes of the scheduled 36 hole contest looked to be going Berrisford’s way as he was quickly three up after just four holes thanks to some solid golf and occasional birdie.

Ryder though started to find his game and gradually got back to all square after the 16th following his third birdie in nine holes and then made lunch taste even better by winning both the 17th and 18th to be two up at the halfway point of the match.

The second half of the match produced some spectacular golf in difficult conditions.

Berrisford again started the stronger and a birdie on the fourth hole had the match all square.

Back came Ryder with birdies at the next two holes to take a two-up advantage but the match was still far from over.

By the 12th the match was back to all square only for Ryder to make another birdie to once again take the advantage and when he also won the 14th it looked as though the title was only heading one way. Berrisford though drew on his recent experience of winning the Yorkshire title and from then on in played flawless golf and when Ryder found trouble from the 18th tee the match was destined for a sudden-death playoff.

It was finally settled on the first extra hole when Berrisford’s approach from 245yards found the putting surface to set up an eagle chance and with it the title.
