St Helens Town 4

Steeton 6

STEETON made it back-to-back wins in Hallmark Security League Division One North following a 10-goal thriller at St Helens Town.

It couldn't have started better for Steeton, Ben Richardson put through Ben Clarkson and he showed a cool head by slotting home as the Chevrons gained the early advantage.

Things got even better two minutes later, Jordan Wilmore, back in the starting 11, played a lofted ball forward which eventually made its way to Clarkson's strike partner, Andy Briggs, and he doubled the lead on nine minutes.

The hosts pulled one back in the first sign that this game was going to go absolutely goal crazy, Matty Smith showed nice feet on the wing, before sending a low fizzing ball into the box which evaded everybody, including goalkeeper Alfie Stevens-Neale.

It almost got better for the visitors on 32 minutes, Wilmore at the centre of the action again, sent through Angus Maney who attempted to loft the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper but the post prevailed at both sides looked for the next goal.

Steeton's Toby Jeffrey scored his second of the season as his effort made its way into the top corner to put a little bit of breathing space between the teams.

Briggs found the back of the net again for his fourth in two games and sent Steeton in at half-time 4-1 up.

The start of the second half saw Tim Hird - usually solid, and guided the younger players through the game - losing the ball in midfield, but nothing came from the attack as it broke down before anything significant occurred.

Four came five on 54 minutes, Wilmore's testing free-kick was headed away, the clearance was poor and only found Richardson, his magnificent first-time volley made its way in at the near post.

On the hour Steeton were probably wondering how much the were going to score that afternoon.

Clarkson's perseverance paid off as he bundled in his second and Steeton's sixth.

Substitutes were next on Mason's agenda. Darragh Davy-Burke and Josh Debenham, who both came through the youth system, made their first season outings in the first-team. Bobby Carter was also introduced. Ten of the 14 in the matchday squad were aged 21 or under.

However, with 21 minutes remaining, St Helens gave themselves a reason to keep going. A cross came in deep towards the back post and the man there made no mistake as he headed in for 6-2.

The hosts came forward more and more as they took control, Stevens-Neale was needed to make a scrambling save.

A long range effort gave St Helens minor hope on 82 minutes as supporters and players alike began to believe the impossible was indeed possible.

Just 60 seconds later another effort was thrashed in, prompting frantic calls to the officials with the amount of time left the question on most people's lips.

However, the young side showed plenty of character, Stevens-Neale held a spectacular effort before Steeton almost make it seven courtesy of the centre-half's foot.

Steeton: Stevens-Neale, Mason (Davy-Burke 62), Morgan, Wilmore, Pearson, Hird, Jeffrey, Richardson, Briggs (Carter 65), Clarkson, Maney (Debenham 65').
