AN evening of “President’s promises” auction was held at Wharfedale Rugby Club in September.

A large crowd gathered as over 60 lots were auctioned by former Wharfedale Mini’s Rugby and Grassington Juniors Football Club member James Stephenson.

Following a curry feast the auction began with lots ranging from a drone photography package to dog training, a day at York races to meals at the Dales' finest hostelries.

James, a former Ermysted’s pupil, is a member of Upper Wharfedale Cricket Club, who have just secured back to back promotions in the Nidderdale and District Amateur Cricket League.

Despite being a novice at auctioneering, “Stevo” took to the role with enthusiasm and skill, providing an entertaining and humorous performance lasting over two hours.

After associated costs, the amount to be divided between the cricket, football and rugby junior clubs was over £8,000.

Tim Lockett, president of Upper Wharfedale Cricket Club, said: “We were humbled by people’s generosity in providing lots and being enthusiastic bidders. We're delighted by the show of support for all three sports within our local community, all of which rely heavily of the good will of so many to keep open opportunities to play sport for all ages. These funds will come in handy at a time when investment in grassroots sport has become more challenging to secure. The sporting outlook is promising.”
