TEMPERATURES tumbled along with course records at this year’s Withins Skyline race and junior Curly Wurly Rat Run races.

The first ground frost of the season, in addition to the long dry summer, turned the usual man eating bogs into little more than muddy patches on the outward route for the senior race and made the ground hard and fast going for the junior races.

Ribble Valley’s Callum Davidson took the title in the men’s race (41.51). Ilkley Harriers’ Nathan Edmondson crossed the line in second place (42.22) from Ribble Valley’s Tom Corrigan, third, (43.00).

Crossing the finish line in tenth place overall, Ribble Valley’s Nicola Jackson won the ladies race (45.44), breaking the 2015 record set by Lindsey Brindle by over a minute.

Ribble Valley stole the show in the ladies race as second and third ladies were Helen Glover (47.13) and Caitlin Rice (48.32).

The junior Curly Wurly Rat Runs got off to a fast and furious start with the under-9s racing to lead the way up the narrow path out of Penistone quarry.

The first of the junior records fell as Wharfedale Harriers’ Hugo Bishop set a punishing pace to be first out of the quarry and won the race (2.30), taking ten seconds off James Sadler-Townsend’s 2015 record.

The second junior record was smashed as Keighley and Craven’s Bethan Buckley won the girls’ race in 2.39 minutes, taking eight seconds off the record set by Phoebe Midgley in 2015 and Lily McGuinness in 2006. Buckley was also an impressive second overall.

Second and third under-9 girls were Wharfedale duo Isobel Patefield (3.16) and Elena Hooper (3.21).

In the main under-17 junior race, it was the Wharfedale duo of Jack Muir and Alex Thompson who led from the start.

Muir was first out of the quarry but Thompson caught him up during the early stages and never looked back, winning the race (11.09) from Muir (11.20) and Keighley’s Eric Beaumont (11.53).

Ilkley duo Poppy Anderson and Bernadette Raven battled hard for first place in the girls’ race with Anderson taking the title (12.57) from Raven (13.07) and Wharfedale’s Emily Jones (13.32).

Under-19 race winner was Wharfedale’s Logan Hargreaves-Madhas (14.22) and the girl’s winner was Todmorden Harriers’ Rebecca James (14.54).

First over the line in the under-11 and under-15 races and winner of the under-15 boys’ race was Barlick’s Jack Villiers (5.56) ahead of Horwich’s Toby Middleton (5.59) and Wharfedale’s Hamish Wills (6.27). Calder Valley’s Maya Brunt won the under-15 girls’ race (8.00).

The under-13 race was won by Keighley’s James Sadler Townsend (6.39). The under-13 girls’ race podium was dominated by Wharfedale Harriers as Amelie Lane ran like the wind to win both the under-13 girls race (7.20) and first girl over the line in the under-11 and under-15 races. Meanwhile Emily Anderson was second (7.47) and Olivia Aldham was third (7.53).

Setting a new under-11 course record of 6.40 minutes, Keighley’s Archie Peaker took seven seconds off the record set by Joseph Carnelly in 2013.

The under-11 girls’ race saw another record tumble as Barlick’s Lucille Pickles finished in 7.22 minutes, breaking Alice Jones’ 2014 record. Second and third girls were Keighley’s Milly Timbers (8.00) and Wharfedale’s Layla Kirkley (8.11).
