SKIPTON Golf Club, this year celebrating its 125th anniversary and the launch of its newly remodelled course, have played home and away ‘War of the Roses’ matches with fellow Quasquicentennials Accrington Golf Club.

Both were keen to include members from all areas of the club and in the first match in July, 43 men and lady golfers from Skipton travelled over to Accrington to play 22 pairs matches in a Ryder Cup- style format.

The range of ability went from Skipton’s club professional, Peter Robinson, to the highest male and female handicaps available.

The return leg has now taken place at Skipton, with 80 plus golfers from both clubs taking part.

Skipton captain Gerald Corrigan said: “With a 15 points to 7 deficit from the first leg, it was always going to be an uphill battle. However, after a fast start, as the scores came in, a repeat of the “miracle of Medina” seemed on the cards.

“The gap narrowed to just two points and our opponents began a series of anxious looks at the scoreboard. The final score showed Skipton won the battle on the day, 12-8, but the accumulative scores over the two legs meant the war was won by Accrington 23-19.”
