BRIGHOUSE Town Under-21s suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat against Hemsworth Miners Welfare in the West Riding County FA Development League.

Hemsworth are a much older and stronger side but Brighouse started very quickly and dominated the early exchanges.

However, from their first corner, Hemsworth scored after an excellent delivery. Being a much bigger side, Town found it quite difficult defending dead ball situations.

Although Brighouse outplayed Hemsworth in the midfield, they did not create any clear chances as the last pass or cross was poor.

Brighouse continued to play the better football before the break, yet it was they who conceded twice more just before half-time.

It was quite a difficult talk at the interval as Town had done little wrong and played most of the football.

The second half started well for Brighouse and they duly scored from a penalty. Finn Donovan was brought down in the box and he picked himself up to convert the spot kick.

The fight back was quickly brought to an end when the Town goalkeeper miskicked a back pass and Hemsworth scored to restore their three goal advantage.

After that, Hemsworth started to dominate and they wrapped up all three points with a fifth goal.

Barry Thomas, the Brighouse assistant manager, said: “It was a strange match. We played really well in the first half without really creating any good chances but we found ourselves 3-0 down.

"We never recovered but I could not fault the players for their effort.”
