A COLD east wind failed to deter 75 competitors from heading for the lofty Addingham Moorside trials venue on Sunday to contest the annual D.T. Smith Trophy Trial.

The trophy is one attraction but the main menu featured the Yorkshire Centre ACU Trials Championship which has progressed to a Martin Crosswaite versus Danny Gamble points battle.

Predictably the East Morton landlord turned on the heat at the 'Moorside by turning in a crushing two penalty ride through 15 rugged Danny Cockshott-planned sections.

Heavy mist blotted out much of the course at 8.30am when Sean Fletcher and his assistant daughter Poppy plotted the compact course for 17 competitors who rode four laps of six varied sections.

Crosswaite got round through 12 sections without penalty and incurred two marks in the ninth and 11th sections.

Challenger Ben Hemingway dropped seven single marks and then added another five when he stopped in the final section. Gamble did not hit his usual form and finished fifth behind Bradford's Kieran Child.

Jamie Stephenson ran away with Clubman A despite chasing after his youngest son Freddie through every section.

The Liversedge boy was second in his class to Falcon youth Charlie Crossland.

Neil Gaunt headed Clubman B on a sparkling new 300cc four-stroke Beta winning the class with a penalty free ride from Sherco mounted duo Phillip Hammond and Rob Hardisty.

The three small wheel class contenders had a tough time with all six sections on the hard side. The final three scaled the rock escarpment while the openers tested navigation.

Harrison Lightfoot held off brothers Jimmy and Bobby Crabtree on the hard route.

Poppy Fletcher hassled Bradley Crabtree on the middle route while Aiden Richardson won the easy class from Will Ethell and Alanna Eagleton.

Edward Abram battered a knee but finished fourth ahead of little Izzy Addy. She only stopped once and footed through 22 sections - and cleaned one.

Meanwhile, the Spen club dropped in on the Parkwood Offroad Centre on Sunday to stage their sixth club championship trial.

The club opened another chapter in their long history of staging trials by including a sidecar class at the Tong venue where national Inter champion Nigel Scott tested two ambitious crews.

He and daughter Gracie-Mae rode the hard route while David Nourish and passenger Andy Wright chose the mid-route.

Raw newcomer Anthony Ayrton and 14-year-old daughter Lucy rode their hastily cobbled-up Montesa 315 and sidecar.

In results terms, John Hillam won the hard route from returnee Rob Loney. Paul Kettlewell rode through eight sections five times to win Clubman A.

Bradford veteran Chris Johnson turned on the style to run away with Clubman B while Ted Spooner took the easy class.
