SUNDAY’S annual Stoop Fell Race saw a double triumph for a pair of Wharfedale Harriers teenagers.

Under-19 runners have the option of running the junior quarry runs or the full senior race, which is run over Haworth Moor.

This year, the “newly qualified” Wharfedale duo of Will Thompson and Emily Jones made the transition look easy.

Thompson was first U19 male in 38 minutes and 29 seconds, thrashing those in his category by over four minutes, while Jones romped home as first U19 female and 10th lady overall in 42.06.

As is tradition in this annual race, all runners donned a Santa hat. The treacherous terrain dampened the Christmas spirit somewhat though.

The changeable weekend conditions meant some areas were a deep, muddy bog, while there was rock-hard frozen ground to be found elsewhere.

The contrasting surface meant, in many ways, the only predictable part of the race were the mad charge out of the quarry and up the track past Drop Farm.

Vital positions can be lost and gained there as what follows is a long, single file charge though heather moorland before reaching the much wider track leading to Harbour Lodge.

From there, the race is a muddy battle through the terrain until the painful long uphill haul to the finish line.

Ilkley Harriers superstar Jack Wood dominated the main race to win in 30.27, although Rossendale’s Sam Tosh pushed him hard to come second in 30.33. Pudsey and Bramley’s Harry Holmes was third in 31.15.

Popular Bingley Harriers star Ian Holmes finished sixth and was first V50, setting a new course record of 31.59.

In the ladies event, Ribble Valley’s Nichola Jackson stormed home to win in 36.03, way in front of York Knavesmire’s Nik Tarrega (37.31) and Calder Valley’s Lucy Collins (39.17).

The junior quarry runs took their usual format of the mad dash along the quarry bottom before the steep climb out of the quarry to the rest of the race.

The U9s go first and their race was won by Calder Valley’s Harry Cliff (2.41), who beat Keighley and Craven’s Oscar Timbers (2.47) in a thrilling sprint finish.

Timbers had led throughout but Cliff found a crucial spurt of energy on the final climb out of the quarry and stormed home to win. Settle Harriers’ Carl Sanderson took third place (2.52).

Young Keighley prodigy Bethan Buckley sped round the course to come third overall, winning the girls’ race (2.48) from Wharfedale’s Isobel Patefield (3.14).

Keighley’s Archie Peaker dashed home fourth overall in the main junior race to win the U11 race (6.34) from Ilkley’s Alexander Wolfenden (6.58).

Keighley’s Katie Buckley was first U11 girl in 7.29 as she continued the family trend. Barlick’s Lucille Pickles was not far behind in 7.34.

First U13 girl was Wharfedale’s Amelie Lane. Her time of 7.02 was enough to win the girl’s race overall in addition to the U13 event.

U15 boys race and overall younger junior race winner was Barlick’s Jack Villiers in 6.07, while the girls’ winner was Ilkley’s Georgia Weston with 8.22.

Finally, in the U17 race, Wharfedale clubmates Jack Muir and Alex Thompson ran round the double lap course together and crossed the line in a dead heat win of 11.24. Ilkley’s Poppy Anderson won the girls’ race in 13.32.
