Daisy Hill 2

Steeton 2

STEETON grabbed a point from their visit to Daisy Hill with a dramatic 92nd-minute equaliser from Ben Clarkson in this Hallmark Security League Premier Division clash.

A fast and furious opening saw little decent football as both sides struggled to settle down, both assistant referees testing their flags for offsides several times.

A precision chip forward from Andy Holden was headed home by Callum Meade on 21 minutes, but the Steeton striker had strayed offside.

Further efforts from Meade, Luke Baldwin and James Grogan were either blocked or just wide of the target.

Despite being second best, the closest to a breakthrough came from the Cutters when Ashley Stott pulled the ball back for Ryan Farnworth, but visiting goalkeeper Fletcher Paley made a fine save.

The Chevrons started the second half well with Ryan Tweddle denying Meade after a through ball from Baldwin, then Meade again going close, but just wide.

Stott was looking sharp at the other end and was just off target himself.

The breakthrough came on 65 minutes, a killer pass from Meade to Clarkson, who rounded the keeper coolly before slotting home.

At this point it felt like there could be only one winner but Daisy Hill proved everybody wrong by equalising within 60 seconds, Stott seizing on a loose ball and running through to finish well.

Five minutes later and the game was turned upside down when the home side took the lead.

A strong run from left-back Tom Lee was ended by a foul and Lewis Wilkinson stepped up to curl the free-kick into the bottom corner.

With time running out Steeton went to Plan B, leaving just three at the back and adding Jari El to the forward line.

The extra pressure didn’t result in clear chances, though, with Cutters’ centre-back Macauley Farrington tackling everything that moved.

In fact, the home side felt they were closest to a goal when they made big call for a penalty, but the referee wasn’t convinced. Five minutes added time was called, and Steeton pushed forward again.

For the second time Meade was the creator, hooking a cross to the far post.

Clarkson leapt highest, glancing it into the top corner to complete a dramatic double for himself, and tie the game at 2-2.

A fair result with the Chevrons failing to turn possession into chances, but showing great determination to battle back and bring home a point.
