A TENNIS player from Bradley is aiming to play for England at the World Championships at Lisbon in August.

Andrew Hutchinson, a member of Ilkley Tennis Club who competes in the Over 55s category, recently won the Scottish Open in Glasgow and reached the final of the British Open in Tipton just before that.

Hutchinson, who is 54 but allowed to compete in Over 55s as he turns 54 in April, beat Ronnie Terras, the Scottish number one, in the Scottish Open final.

He then beat two Great Britain players in the semi- and quarter-finals of the British Open on his way to the final.

Although he lost that match, the ranking points he gained moved him up to number eight in his age group.

He said: "I played for England Over 50s four years ago, so I think I need to get into the top three in the Over 55s to play for England in August.

Hutchinson, who plays for Ilkley in the Yorkshire and National Leagues, started playing for Keighley Tennis Club at the age of 10 before moving to Ilkley two years later.

To gain more ranking points, Hutchinson is now aiming to win on clay at the British Open Seniors tournament at Bournemouth in May.
