THERE was an excellent turnout at the weekend for the Captains' drive in, which heralds the start of the new season at the Settle Golf Club.
All three captains, Mike Elstub, Anne Morton and Peter Morton, all hit good straight drives.
Greta Hargreaves won the prize for guessing the correct combined distance of the drives.
In the competition that followed, John Read, recent winner of the Winter League trophy, led his team of Mary Gooch and Peter Dransfield to a comfortable win.
Their five shots better than par score gave them a well-deserved victory over the much-fancied team of Mike Elstub, Anne Morton and Ray Jones.
All the players enjoyed soup and sandwiches in the newly refurbished clubhouse after the competition.
With the course in excellent condition, combined with the changes to the clubhouse, there is a feeling of optimism within the club for the coming season.
