The County Challenge Cup and Trophy matches took preference last weekend with a mixed bag of results for the Craven teams.

Skipton LMS and Settle United recorded 4-0 home wins while Barnoldswick Town progressed with a single goal victory at Rawdon Old Boys.

Cononley Sports and Grassington had narrow defeats on their travels with both games requiring extra time to settle the issue, while a 7-2 defeat for Kelbrook at Knaresborough Town was scant reward for their efforts.

In the Trophy, Pendle Athletic overcame the embarrassment of having their Victory Park pitch doubled booked to find a alternative venue before defeating their Huddersfield opposition 5-4. Kelbrook Reserves made up for the first team defeat with a 2-1 home win over Barclays FC and the all Craven clash saw home team Grindleton beat Cowling 4-3.

Skipton LMS entertained their Halifax League visitors and playing some of their best football of the season were rewarded with 4-0 win. Andy Smithson gave his side the lead on the quarter hour that proved to be the only goal of the half. John Allan's early second half goal was soon followed by Paul Ryder to put LMS in control and their excellent display was sealed when sub Scott Edmondson scored the fourth.

Settle United also defeated another Halifax side 4-0, putting aside their poor league form Steven Mounsey with a hat-trick and Andrew Cross were the scorers against Ryburn United. Joining the successful clubs in the next round will be Bradley and Skipton Town who received first round byes.

In the Devonshire Carpets Premier League Hellifield missed out on the chance to gain top spot when they suffered a 3-2 home defeat against WFC Clitheroe who themselves move into second place.

Gargrave had a good result at Waddington winning 4-3 after holding a 3-1 lead at half-time. The home side came back strongly in the second half but the in-form Tom Varey hit the winner for Gargrave who also had Paul Wilkin (2) and Man-of-the-Match Liam Jameson on the scoresheet. Bottom club Bradley lost at home to Clitheroe Lions by 6-1 and remain without a point.

A good day all round for Gargrave as the reserves found their feet in Division One and recorded a comprehensive 5-0 win over Roll Royce whose furious manager, Lee Parkinson, said: "In three years as manager of this side, this was possibly the worst performance I have witnessed." Joel Timmins (3) and Ben Brown (2) were on target for Gargrave.

Chatburn took the lead in Division Two with a seven-goal thrashing of Skipton Town Reserves. Town started brightly but once the visitors got into their stride they took command of the game and scored three before the break, following up four further goals in the second half.

Skipton LMS Reserves tried hard at Trawden Celtic but were beaten 2-0. There were words of praise for Will Shuttleworth who took over in goal for the LMS and performed very well.

Earby Town are in fourth place after a 3-0 win over Embsay Reserves. Town were two goals up in the first quarter of hour through a 25-yard strike from the left foot of Chris Parry and a James Oldroyd penalty. However for all their pressure Earby could not increase their lead until the second half when Oldroyd converted another penalty kick.

There was welcome relief for Rolls Royce Reserves who had lost five successive games before defeating Cononley Sports reserves 3-2. Carl Ashton gave them a early lead and James Wade in the visitors' goal denied further goals with two excellent saves before Cononley drew level virtually on half-time when Ian Jolly took advantage of a slip by the home keeper.

The game followed the same pattern in the second half when Liam Somers put Rolls back in front only for Paul Cauvin to convert a cross with 20 minutes to go to level the scores. Dale Robinson then put Rolls back in front and only a goal line clearance denied Jess Parker of sealing the game.

The game was marred by the fact that some of the home players had items and money stolen from the dressing rooms while the match was in progress. Officials of Rolls Royce would be grateful for any information that may lead to the persons responsible being apprehended by ringing Lee Barrett on 07843075894.

In Division Three Barnoldswick Barons retained top spot with a 4-0 home win over Hellifield Sports while Grindleton Reserves now occupy second place with single goal victory at Earby Town Reserves.

There was more misery for the Bradley club as Waddington Reserves hammered home ten goals with a solitary goal in reply.
