Steeton 6

Daisy Hill 1

STEETON returned to their early-season form in the spring sunshine and celebrated by recording their biggest win of the season in Hallmark Security League Division One North against Daisy Hill.

The visiting Cutters had made the brighter start and took the lead when Nicholas Hepple ran onto a through ball and slotted home.

There had been calls for a penalty minutes before when Danny Warburton played in Hepple, but with the dependable Adam Platt was able to make a saving tackle.

The visitors were to rue that miss and Steeton woke up and started to create chances, goalkeeper Joe Leather saving twice from Ben Clarkson.

The Chevrons were starting to get some success down the right flank and it was from that area that three goals came in the final 15 minutes of the half.

The equaliser came when Sam Rooke headed home a Toby Jeffrey corner, then Jack Richmond threaded a ball forward for Angus Maney to score number two. Finally, another Jeffrey cross was headed home by Ben Clarkson.

Daisy Hill bounced back from this blitz late in the half, but a frantic scramble in the penalty box didn’t create the vital goal they needed.

Any thoughts of a second half comeback were quickly squashed with two more quickfire goals. First Jordan Veillette played the killer pass for Clarkson to latch onto and score his second, then Richmond scored himself, slamming a loose ball home after more penalty-box pinball.

A flurry of substitutions then took over, with Graham Holmes coming on to make his league debut.

It seemed certain that there would be more goals, with Clarkson being denied his hat-trick by a Jordan Hussey clearance off the line.

Eventually a sixth goal came with six minutes left, a long ball from Alistair Morgan and an excellent finish from Richmond who completed the rout.

Daisy Hill never gave up and will consider themselves unlucky not to score more than the one goal, but it was Steeton’s day and the crowd went home happy after another goal-fest at Cougar Park.
